I'd say want instead of need. And if we didn't want to be there, we wouldn't be.

But their want could be as simple as liking a few thousand soldiers buying booze each weekend. In which case, they'd be just as happy if we sent a bunch of college kids.

We aren't the world's policeman solely out of altruism; we volunteered because we like the prestige and because we want to protect our interests.

Let me rephrase that: "economic or strategic extortion" such as, for example, selling the latest and greatest US weapons to your historic enemy or, in the case of Whitlam, your ambassador repeatedly hinting to the Governor-General of Australia that he should sack our democratically elected Prime Minister.

If youdon't want to payt for them the your govermetn should simply stop paying, If you don'tr want the bases your govermt should ask us to leave. I am in favor of that.
