    Default Could Malibu return?

Unless you live under a rock, you know Disney bought Marvel.

Years ago, Joe Q was asked whether a revival of the Ultraverse was possible. He said no, because the original creator's contracts supposedly specified that they had to be paid for the use of said characters.

If the above is indeed true, do you think Marvel, now with far greater monetary resources to back them up, would give the go ahead on a Malibu revival? I can see Disney showing a degree of interest in the market potential of some of these characters.

    What do you think?

I'd like to see the characters from Malibu's line show up in an Exiles type story, but I think a return to form on the Ultraverse line is not very marketable and more of a 'Hey, remember those guys' kind of thing.

Or maybe X-Men vs Ex-Mutants. Or something

No, it doesn't make any difference. Marvel kept the Malibu characters dead because, in their opinion, the cost of bringing them back exceeded the value of having them back. As neither cost nor value is materially affected by this deal, there is no reason this calculation would change for Disney.

I'm gonna go with no, mainly becasue I'm not sure any of the Malibu stuff really has any real marketability. Prime, maybe, but to deal with any Shazam! legal issues? MiB i think reverted back to the owner, Ex-Mutants would likely reopen an ugly can of legal worms. Dinosaurs for Hire, if they still own them, could be something...kids like Dinosaurs and guns...Mantra, if they want to court the LGBT audience, I guess, but Marvel's Cloud could do the job just as well.

I'd like to know who owns what before making a decision.
Has that question ever been answered?
I would love to see Night Man again. Prime as a reverse Venomesque symbiote. Hellblade and Cayman in X-verse. Shuriken in Moon Knight or Daredevil.
Bring back my DC! In the meantime, make mine Marvel and Image!

Sadly, no. I think Disney is more interested in the film/TV aspect of the Marvel-owned characters than in the comic book aspect. Much more money can be made in film/TV than books. Some of the Ultraverse characters are too similar to characters being out now to be really viable.

    Night Man, similar to Batman.
    Prototype, similar to Iron Man.
Ultraforce, similar to Avengers (which is being worked on as a future movie)

Mantra might be too controversial to be an option (a transgendered superhero).

The Strangers, The Solution and Freex might be possible but Disney will want to reach a large audience and will probably want to de-age the characters to teens but they already made a team superhero movie Zoom. So those options might be out.

Prime is a good possibility. A kid superhero is right up Disney's alley.

The other characters (Firearm, Solitaire, Sludge, Warstrike, Wrath, Rune, Hardcase) I don't think are film/TV worthy.

It seems unlikely to me. I don't think that the cost of bringing them back would have been an issue if the perceived upside potential in it was high.

One of the fundamental differences between DC and Marvel is that, as DC has a big company to cushion their losses (Warner Bros.), in general DC keeps around unsuccessful but praised titles for a lot longer than Marvel generally does.

I still want to kick whoever it is that canceled the Dan Slott run on Thing! Not since the cancelation of Star Trek has an early death to a series handed from on-high been so infamous!

Anyway, it'd be interesting to see what happens, and I don't count out the possibility of a future ultraverse revival now that Marvel has a lot more cash to work with.

The stories were really well-written by classic guys like Gerber and Englehart, and there are a lot of good fan memories of them. They were light years ahead of almost all the new comics universes created in the early 1990s.

I could see very much that happening. Because the main reason Marvel didn't bring the Malibu characters back was that they were not sure about the ownership of it. And since Marvel just came out of bankruptcy ten years ago it didn't had the strong back legally to face any repercutions if things went bad. In this past year, Marvel did everything they could to not being sued. I remember when they brought back a team called "The Champions". They were threaten by a videogame company(I think?) and rather than fight in court, Marvel cowardly changed the title right away at the next issue.

So yea I could see the characters returning now since nobody f*** with Disney.
