Default Sony hires screenwriter for Spider-Man 5 and 6

Interesting story in the latest Variety.

Vanderbilt was the first writer on "Spider-Man 4." Director Sam Raimi brought on "Rabbit Hole" playwright David Lindsay-Abaire to rewrite him, and Gary Ross is now rewriting that script. The studio is enthusiastic about where it stands as the picture begins prepping for an early 2010 production start for a May 2011 release.

Raimi didn't embrace all of Vanderbilt's ideas, but execs at Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios have. Vanderbilt has been hired to pen the fifth and sixth movies, which have an interconnected storyline. That's what was originally discussed when Vanderbilt signed on to write "Spider-Man 4," but the idea of shooting a fourth and fifth film back to back with the original cast was scrapped.
    Anyone care to speculate?

So that's a no go on shooting the fourth and fifth installments together.

I didn't realize they were already considering a sixth film before the fourth was even written.

Yes, I speculate that none of the next three movies will be as good as Spider-Man 2.

So, is that a sort of back-handed way of saying that Spider-Man 5 and 6 won't feature the original cast from SM1 - 4?

Forget Spiderman 4, 5 and 6 and just redo 1-3. When something is that terrible I think you should just start over rather than waste money trying to fix it.

This doesn't make any sense. If they would redo 1-3 they would be trying to fix it and being a waste of money but instead they move on with 4-6.

This would be appropriate considering OMD.

It would seem so. And since Raimi said he would only work with the original cast and they went to the trouble of commissioning a screenwriter who's work didn't satisfy Raimi, it would seem he might be out as well.

I can't help but wonder if James Cameron is still interested in the franchise.

Even if they redo 1-3 (which I don't think needs it anyway) the original versions are still out there and still not al that old, so you've fixed nothing and added nothing to the franchise at the same time.

Since the third film pretty much tied up the loose threads from the first two, there's no need to mention anything from the previous films they don't want to incorporate.

First thought on seeing the thread title: who the frell is Sony Hires.
Second thought: isn't this film franchise pretty much dead after number 3, quality wise anyway?

Good stuff that Spider-Man 5 and 6 will have a interconected story could make that Spider-Man 5 and 6 can be put in the Cinemas only with a year of waiting.

The Spider-Man movies are great, but they take to much time to be made.
Spider-Man 1 was a movie that i heard would be made since the end of the 80`s with James Cameron being talked as being the director and Arnold Shwarzneguer being talked to be Doc Octopus as far as i remember.

Between Spider-Man 3 and the fourth movie of the franchise there is a waiting time of four years as said in the article.
So hopefully that by having a story interconected in Spider-Man#5 and #6 there will be only one year waiting between them.
    Pull List:Uncanny Avengers,Avengers,Superior Spider-Man,Daredevil,All New X-Men,Hawkeye,Captain America,Thor:God of Thunder,Swamp Thing,Morbius,Thunderbolts,Iron Man,Fatale.

I heard that the end of Spider-man 4, Peter makes a deal with Mephisto which wipes out everyone's real memories of the first three films. That way 4 and 5 can proceed with a new cast and no one will be the wiser...
"John Stewart. LAME! ...this guy having a ring is like giving the batmobile to a blind old woman with her left leg in a cast."

"Pym biting Blobs head off seems like something that would have happened when i was ten years old and playing with action figures."

"i always assumed that [the blob] had the same powers as his 616 counterpart because, if simply being a huge fat guy was enough to be considered a mutant then there sure are a lot of mutants in 'real life'. "
