Default CBR: Hickman Talks "Secret Warriors"

Nick Fury's war against HYDRA is about hit a major snag, and his name is Norman Osborn. CBR speaks with "Secret Warriors" writer Jonathan Hickman about "Agent of Nothing" and the next arc, "God of Fear, God of War."

I really like this book, but I feel duped in a way that we're not learning anything new about the other Caterpillars, including letting more in of who Jerry Sledge's father really is. I know the next arc is about Phobos, but I really hope that this book doesn't have the interesting characters I remember Brian setting up, and left sitting in the background while established characters hog the spotlight.
I like the Nick Fury/ Hydra/ Contessa stuff, but I really hope the focus is spread more.

Just because they have an end in mind already, don't mean it's getting canned.

Well, if he wants to tighten it up, that's fine, but I hope it's still at least 30 issues. I ♥ this book.

    SW is now my UXM.
This was my very first foray into the Nick Fury/Hydra mythos and thus far, I am absolutely loving it!...There is not a single un-interesting character throughout.
I quite like A. Vitti's art in the preview and I (desperately) hope he stays on to draw alternate arcs with Caselli whom I lovelovelove...(if you read this Mr. Hickman...pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease keep him on). I do like the idea of a finite number of arcs to tell the entire story. It will be like reading a novel where you have a beginning, a middle and a definite end to the major story being told wherein the arcs become the "chapters" that deal with the sub-plots...and you will have the option to do a second or third volume/book if (other) writers feel so inclined.
I am really very excited by this.

I was also surprised to read that this title is a finite series. Seems OK to me. I prefer books that I am enjoying to end prior to me losing interest.

Mine too (first serious foray into Nuck Fury Land) and I can't get enough. I was very surprised to hear that an end is in sight for the book, though it won't be tomorrow (I hope, remembering an Exiles cancellation that was very surprising.)

Hickman is becoming a star and Caselli does awesome work. I like how his works look like animated character designs with just a shade more detail and the use of background colors to set the mood in this book. There are layers to this story that other books just don't feel like they have.

HYDRA is like COBRA on steroids and I can't wait for the confrontation between HYDRA, HAMMER, and Fury & gang. It will be explosive.

That is good, because it contradicts the previously established mythos. To better appreciate this series, it is no doubt better to approach it as something totally fresh.

(For what it's worth... "SHIELD is a sister organization of HYDRA" was covered at length in the old Nick Fury vs SHIELD miniseries. And then both SHIELD and HYDRA were totally dismantled. Then SHIELD was restarted as a small organization -just a handful of people led by Nick Fury, exacly like the Secret warriors of today- before growing again to its current size).

As Mark Twain said : history doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes!

If the book is still selling well at the end of its shorter-than-60-issue "finite run," you had better believe that Marvel will continue to publish it in one form or another. Hickman mght not be involved beyond that point, but that doesn't mean the book will end.

I kind of like the fact that there is an endpoint to this book. I love it, but I kept thinking that the "secret warriors" part could get old after a while. How long can he really keep these kids secret. Plus, we know SHIELD will be reinstated at some point and Fury could possibly be put back in charge, so the whole concept of the book would be done.
Maybe when it finishes, Hickman can relaunch it as a Fury/SHIELD book?

Or once the book ends, what's left of The Caterpillars and Fury's other Secret Warrior teams will become their own independent team (give or take a few members), and a new story w/ a different arc will focus on them rather than the Fury/HYDRA war.

“People should not look at this as one of those flashy retcons where I just thought it would be cool to make the Contessa a bad guy,” the writer explained. “A lot goes into the direction of all these characters and we certainly don't want to trample years and years of devotion by loyal S.H.I.E.L.D. fans
This book is built on retcons on top of retcons and he actually says not to think of something as a retcon and it wont trample over years of devotion?
    ..........................right.

This series is nothing like that! Why, just last arc they stole some helicarriers, got their own troops and...

    ...right.
