Default Where do you start reading Spider-Man?

    Hello,
I recently got into comics. When I was little I watched the animated series. I watched all 3 Spider-man movies. Now I want to start with reading the comics, but I have no idea where to jump in.

The story I know is from the animated series, I also read Civil War. What would be the best story to start? And which story's after that, as I don't know what the story's are.

    Any help is appreciated

#600 is a decent place. It's only two issues old, so it should be pretty easy to track down. There's either recap or exposition for most of what you don't know, and it's a fairly self-contained issue featuring the marriage of Aunt May and the return of Dr. Octopus.
The Punisher: I’m going to cauterize your rectum, sealing it shut, so when you turn those delicious Pink Pants™ Fruit Pies into waste products the bilirubin in your feces will leach into your bloodstream and you’ll die screaming! And I’ll watch while having sex with this grateful prostitute!

Trussed-Up Hooker: Blueberry are my favorite!

In other words, what StoneGold said.

I still think the best start is with USM #1 i mean it's only 22 TPBs or 11 HCs and you got the whole history of the character.

Thanks for the help, I'm more intrested in the Amazing Spider-man.
Would "One More Day" also be a good start, that is right after Civil War right?

Brand New Day would be a better start than OMD because it starts the whole new continuity while OMD is the end of the old one.

Ok, so I don't have to read OMD for Brand New Day?
Would it be a waste of money to order OMD aswell?

What comes right after Civil War is Back in Black, and then OMD. They all follow from each other. It's better to have both than just OMD since you have read Civil War. Without OMD you may be confused by BND (specifically Spider-Man is suddenly single instead of being married and his identity is secret once more). Like the title implies it's a new start for the series. OMD is a popular story (not that you'd realise it from reading the internet where a minority loves to rant against it) and isn't a waste of money (although the above minority will jump at the occasion to contradict me).

Id start with bnd and ignore omd for now. Omd is only relevant if youve been reading spiderman for a long time. If you want to read a lot of spiderman you can pick up either the back issues relatively cheap online or you can buy the paperback trades/hardcovers. Theres brand new day volumes 1-3, kravens first hunt, new ways to die, crime and punishment, death and dating, character assination, and one that recently came out. Id say its best off to read them in order
comic fans aren't happy unless there's something to bitch about

I buy comics for the characters not for the writer/artist

currently reading issue 340 of amazing spiderman cd-rom.

ASM issue 546 is the perfect jumping on point for any new fan looking for accessible Spider-Man stories with some occasioanlly strong artistry. It was essentially MADE for potential fans like you, Jeffery. Now, for GOOD ASM stories, I'd strongly recommend most of what was published before December of 2007 save for a very long and critically panned arc called The Other. Its a weak link in an otherwise strong chain of ASM stories penned by none other than JMS. Other than that and the mediocer yet inviting stories of BND, you have decades - DECADES - of wonderful, retcon and devil free Spider-Man stories to savor including classics like Kravens Last Hunt and plenty others I'll let you discover. Believe me, nothing of BND is worth your time or money.

Thanks for the help every one.
I only read the main story of Civil War, but it was confusing with Spider-man turning sides. So I will start with Spider-man's story of Civil War and continue from there. Will take some time to catch up, but I'll buy them in TPB and HC, so I will buy one book at a time and catch up eventually. Thanks for the help.

I would recomend starting from ASM#600.
Which is a good jumping point, with a story that is well worth to be the centenary story that it is,and is a story that reflects well the good quality that the stories since the start of BND had.

Starting with Civil War is a good choice as well, since from there the stories get better.
And from OMD to the start of BND you will have a visible improvement of the stories.
And since the start of BND the stories had a classic tone close to the best stories ever published in ASM in the 60`s and 70`s and at the same time the stories have been being original as well.(The creation of a good new suporting cast, creation of amazing new villain`s and have the awaited return of classic villains as well, just to say a few improvements since the start of BND)
    Pull List:Uncanny Avengers,Avengers,Superior Spider-Man,Daredevil,All New X-Men,Hawkeye,Captain America,Thor:God of Thunder,Swamp Thing,Morbius,Thunderbolts,Iron Man,Fatale.
