This was my introduction to the Doom Patrol, and I'm happy to say that it exceeded my expectations. Giffen really did a great job at giving me a feel for each character in the span of only a few pages. The Negative Man has already become one of my favorite characters. Great team dynamic, a sense of humor that seems tailor written for me, and good art to boot.
Seriously, what's not to love about a singularity that wants to negotiate terms?
Really like how Giffen seems to be having a field day with this book, because the excitement really is palpable and as a reader I love that.

I like most of Giffen's work and I've been a little interested in the Silver Age Doom Patrol after reading about them in the JUSTICE mini series.
The art looked great, but the costume designs looked kind of Wildstorm-generic, plus it was 3.99.
Then I saw that Keith Giffen, JM DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire are doing the METAL MEN back up in the issue.
That sealed the deal for me.
I have to say I liked both features very much! And it took me awhile to finish unlike most DC books where you can read them in 3 minutes.

Keith Giffen has been making comics for over 30 years and one of the titles he always wanted a crack at was The Doom Patrol, so I am hoping for the best. I could see Giffen's sense of humor working pretty well with these characters.

Have to say this was a great first issue. The art was fantastic and the story has lots of possibilities. I'm hoping Giffen will tie in more with Morrison's DP run. Giffen's Negative Man reminds me alot of Rebis and The Chief is a bastard, just the way I like him. And what they did to Nudge is just wrong on many levels.

This is my official intro to Doom Patrol so I was expecting a little more of Silver Age wholesome-ness to it. And I thought their name was just for dramatic effect.

Nudge and Grunt first appeared in the John Byrne DP series a few years ago. As for the Silver Age, even then, the book was considered edgy. I would wholly recommend picking up Morrison's DP run in trade, and that will give you a taste of what the modern DP is all about.

And in case I forgot to mention, don't bother with the Byrne DP. Not worth it. He was the Jeph Loeb of his day.

Fantastic. McGuire has really great comedy chops. Loved his facial expressions. And the plot elicited several out-loud-laughs. I'm not sure which feature I enjoyed more really, both hit the spot. Originally Posted by Joe Franklin

I picked it up - loved the old-school checkerboard on the cover.
Doom Patrol: Clark's art was fantastic. I loved the look. I enjoyed the book, but it wasn't quite good enough to jump onto the pull list based on the lead feature. I'd say good but still on probation.
Metal Men: Wow! This was good stuff - best thing I've read this week. A complete story in ten pages. Everything just worked together.,

Both stories were crap and certainly not worth the cover price. Art was pretty bad for DP while the comedy was incredibly stale for MM.

I'm a huge fan of Morrison's dP run (and Arcudi's run, too) so I did have a little trepidation coming into this. However, that worry was unfounded-- the dP story was well done. I especially liked how the Chief was still presented as being a total prick. And I actually loved the Metal Men backup. Maguire is still the best in the business in terms of facial expressions, and Giffen and DeMatteis kept it light and fun. It may get tedious if they keep going back to the well with things like the "oh, Copper was there?" bits, but as far as a first shot, it definitely hit the mark.
