Thought I'd set myself a challenge for the school holidays... These are preliminary sketches, so please- critique away!
There was a battle between light and dark in the world of myth.
The light was diminished and its avatars went into hiding. The lords of the dark were given dominion. For the mythical lands of Great Britain, Black Donald was given rule. Together with the other Dark Lords of Myth, Black Donald plotted to break down the barriers between their lands and ours. They are succeeding- small doorways are opening across the world. One of the most dangerous of these lies in a small city in Scotland- Dundee. The Dark are creeping through.
The Spirit of Scotland, weakened by centuries of exile, has gathered a group of humans and imbued them with powers granted by the Celtic Gods. Where once Scotia would have assembled an army; the future of Scotland lies in the hands of a few disparate strangers.
The Wild Hunt has begun anew.
Imbued with the powers of the BelatuCadros, He is the Fair Shining Knight of Scotia’s defenders. Before his activation, he was a pacifist and is slightly uncomfortable with the role of tactician and warrior he finds himself in. Often, he wrestles with his new instincts and is reluctant to battle.
He has the powers of extreme strength and durability and tactical prowess. He has a set of horns on his head and a toughened skull.
He is in a relationship with Jinks.
Watched over by the Cailleach Bheur, the blue faced hag who brought Winter to the North West of Scotland, Ice Queen is in control of icy temperature. Before she was found by Scotia, she had a brilliant career as a lawyer and was known for her no nonsense attitude. As part of her activation, her skin turned blue and a newfound lack of self-confidence made her even harsher towards people.
She can cast snow, ice-beams and patches of extreme cold which she focuses through her staff. She can also ‘freezer burn’ people with her touch.
Jinks is protected and empowered by the Cat Sith and is the joker of our group. He is always up for a bet or a gamble and especially likes playing practical jokes. He is fickle in his affections, but loyal to those he loves (he is the boyfriend of Stag).
He displays all the powers associated with a human/cat hybrid; retractable claws, flexibility, athletic prowess, good nocturnal eyesight, always lands on his feet etc. but he also has limited telepathy and if someone asks him a question using the ancient rite of taghairm, he must answer it.
Nobody knows why the feared Highland spirit The Brollachan has decided to help Scotia. Hunger is essentially a bodiless spirit, with only blood red eyes and teeth, but it can borrow the bodies of animals and people. Before Scotia found Hunger, he was an overweight and depressed teenager. His first possession was of a cruel bully who had made his life hell at school and this is the body he appears to his team-mates in. You see, when Hunger borrows the body of someone, their soul goes to a dimension known as The Loch. If he keeps their body too long, they remain trapped in The Loch forever and their body becomes a stoor-husk which Hunger can inhabit whenever he wants.
Hunger borrows bodies, in a form of demonic possession. He appears in a Brollochan form- a will o’ wisp with eyes and teeth- and lowers himself over his victim. In his Brollachan form he can only utter one phrase- ‘thyself’- before the possession. As soon as he is in his new borrowed body he replies, ‘myself’.
Beacon is protected by the spirit of the River Tay- Tatha. She is only seventeen and so immature in comparison to many of her team-mates. She doesn’t come from an educated background like Ice Queen and feels inadequate next to her. She often covers her feelings of inadequacy with bravado and bluster
Tatha is little known and was little worshipped and therefore could only imbue Beacon with the subtlest of magics. She is literally a beacon for the mythical beasts of good left in Scotland. She can summon them to wherever she is and they will do her bidding. Her influence doesn’t work on sentient creatures, like kelpies, only animalistic ones. She often calls on the help of a local fuath water spirit.
Let me know what you think- I'm off to work on the designs for Scotia and Black Donald!
