Default Should Peter Parker EVER Be Married...To Anyone?

    Back to Roger Stern...

Stern said that he was OK with the idea that Peter Parker could get married one day. His big objection was that it shouldn't have been to MJ. Do you agree with Stern? Not about MJ being the wrong character for Peter to have married, but that the Spider-Man character could get married; that having Peter stay single forever wasn't necessary to the character?

For instance, i can see the point of Bruce Wayne never marrying, given the character's personality.

I think it makes sense for Peter to get married, yes. It seems to be in perfect keeping with the nature of his character.

Spider-Man/Peter Parker works in any marital setting. Even divorced.

I agree -- in fact, I think it also makes sense that at some point in his life, Peter would be a divorcee, simply because the strain of trying to balance his sense of responsibility about the use of his powers against his sense of responsibility to his wife/family would become too great. Another example of his powers being more of a burden than a boon.

Im not opposed to the idea... i lean towards no.... but like stern, i think the problem with MJ was to make her work with peter she had to change completely....

Never saw this complete make-over of MJ people talk about. She remained pretty outgoing and strong throughout the 20+ years they couple was together. I think people who think she went through dramatic change after the couple got married tend to ignore the character growth she went though before the marriage.

One thing I hope doesn't happen when MJ returns is that she's regressed back to what she was when Ditko/Lee introduced her.

Yes, he should finally 'get the girl', it's his 'happy ever after' and it's not like he hasn't earned it.

BUT - I don't think it should happen until Marvel are ready to retire him as the titular character.

Personally, I think that would send a horrible message.

It really doesn't bother me if Peter gets married. Unfortunately, Joe Quesada can't say the same.

To be fair, he's not alone in that.

Exactly. If the Marvel Universe is coming to an end in five years, let him have his well-earned happy ending.

    But until then...

Oh, I know that and I didn't mean it as a slight to Joe, although I see how my post could be interpreted that way.
What I meant to get across was that it doesn't bother me whether Peter is married or not, but for Joe the mindset is one of "absolutely not".

No worries -- not looking to get involved in a fight.

I think there might be a great many people who would infer that being married, while being a nice reward for good deeds and all, basically signals the end of one's adventures -- that life will become predictable and sort of ho hum after one gets married -- that there will be no more challenges left, or at least not any as exciting as those found when one is single.

I agree Spider-Man will likely be single as long as Joe is EIC.
