I thought he was joking, given the last thing he said.

Quite possibly; they like to throw teasers out there and then never do anything wit them, just to keep people like me hooked for another few months. I pretty much only buy Gambit books, and when they cancelled X-23 I thought there wasn't going to be anything good out there. I was *this* close to dropping comic books altogether. I'm too old to start following other characters that are just 'meh'. I can find other things to occupy my time.
But since Liu just took Astonishing, I'm on board for that! We know she can write a good story in general and a good Gambit specifically. Yea!!!

I'm pretty much the same, this time a couple of weeks ago i was thinking about giving up reading Marvel too for a while because X-23 was cancelled and Legacy was still going to be a Rogue book. I usually read a lot of Marvel books, but Gambits usage made me apathetic to Marvel. Yet Gages comments and Astonishing has got me reading them again as it sounds like he'll have a good role in both.
But yeah i guess Axels comments were either trying to gauge a reaction or just giving hope to the Gambit fans.
Honestly, that sounds like more of the unprofessional trolling that's increasingly become the norm amongst Marvel writers and editors over the last few years.
I can't see him ever getting his own book, but Astonishing at least looks like an improvement.
Any sort of Gambit book that separates him from his that dreadful succubus, Rogue, would be an insta-buy for me. Even if Humberto Ramos or JRJr were on artwork.
I think Lui hinted at Reyes in the first interview about it
Which I hope goes no where. I like Cece for not wanting to be an X-Man not her becoming an X-Man and certainly don't see her with Gambit. Gambit doesn't need to be "hooked up". He needs to be an important resource for the team adn to use his powers like with Daken. To have a bunch of casual flings not related to the X-Men and for Rogue to see what its like for someone to pretend you are just the backup plan. I want to see his skills put to good use. Romance is the last thing the character needs to re-establish himself as a character others writers want to use in the future.
id rather he be developed as a badass rather than put him in another pointless relationship, i want him single

I don't think the relationship was pointless. It established depth to Gambit at the time but given how its been lately with being so one sided, Gambit definitely has had that part of his character fully developed for some time to come. For now, I agree with you, he needs to be single and to work on being a member of the team and useful in both skill and fighting. I so miss cunning and tough Gambit.
I want to see more badass-Gmabit, too. But more than that, I want Gambit to get over Rogue. I liked it in the 90's, now it sucks. So, what's the best way to get over someone?!?!? Yup, you all know the answer: REBOUND! Gambit needs a high-speed low-drag FLING with some lady with whom he develops a mutually self-destructive relationship. The kind where the attraction is purely physical, not mopey. They pull off some great crimes together, drive each other crazy for a while, and then they break up because it was just a fling afterall. But best of all, Gambit will have had a taste of someone else, and he'll be over Rogue at the end of it.
That's what I did whenever I needed to get over someone. I think it'd work for Gambit, too.

I'm not disagreeing that the last five years have been crap. More on Rogue's parts than Gambit's. Gambit's just been an afterthought for all of Marvel's writing for most of that time but you missed my point. His relationship with Rogue did establish alot about the character in terms of what he values and the type of person he is. Yes you can have depth without a romance but not without relationships. Gambit's relationship with Storm in the early days was important too. As noted Gambit just needs to breakway from romance (a rebound fling or better yet multiple flings) is fine as long as its not Frenzy the homocidal maniac and get to show why he's an X-Man the X-Men need around. Rogue's not even Rogue anymore, he should get over that. I'm a Rogue fan and can't stand her right now.

yep, I'm ready for Gambit to be a big part of a steady ongoing team with a writer who likes him ... hoping Astonishing will do this but i'm not so sure about some of the roster on the title
The last 7 years has been shabby when it comes to Marvel's Gambit efforts, but I think he might have turned a corner on the worst of it.
Mike carey did a decent Gambit before he brought back Deathbit.
Sigh, Deathbit.. Peter Milligan was the worst that we had to endure.
Astonishing X-men is a good start, but I would like to see Gambit featured I the flagship book again, it's been far too long.
Perhaps after this Utopia, decimation business is over with.
This may be off topic, but the x-men comics now a days remind me of the terminator movies in the way that a human race is threaten to be extinguished, and that the hammer could drop at any time.
Thing about that is those movies keep bombing (after t2).it just be me though getting that feeling.
