Usually in sports , be it NFL , NBA , MLB or the NHL....there is a trade that happens. And usually the trade is considered to be good for one team and ends up hurting the other team. This right here is the WORST trades in sports.
Since I'm no big NBA , MLB or NHL fan....I'll name.... a couple NFL trades.
The Herschel Walker Trade:
Its the measuring stick to what all NFL trades get listed at. Usually if a trade happens in the NFL , and it involves a star player...you'll see the Walker trade mentioned. So what was the Walker trade ?
Basically it was the trade that stockpiled and gave the Dallas Cowboys ammo to go to the Super Bowl in the 1990's. The trade was between the sad Cowboys (who were on their way to a 1-15 record in 1989) and the upswing Minnesota Vikings (who had been to the NFC Championship game in 1988) .
And its not like Walker was a bum player. In fact Walker had been to a Pro Bowl in 1988 and ran for over 1,500 yards. He was considered at the apex of his career. The Vikings feeling they were close to a SuperBowl felt they needed to get the superstar back. Of course they mortaged the future to do it.
Now how did the Vikings get so worked up to trade 5 players on the roster , 3 1st rd draft picks , 3 2nd Rd draft picks , a 3rd ...and a 6th from 1990-1993 (A total of 14 players....that JJ dealed into 18 total) ? Blame it on the fact Johnson was close at 1st to trading Walker to the Cleveland Browns.
The Browns were close to shipping 2 1st rd picks , 3 2nd rd picks , and a player for Herschel Walker. Jimmy Johnson told the Vikings this and gave them a deadline that evening...and the Vikings GM took the bait.
Walker only lasted 3 seasons with the Vikings , and his totals were pretty dismal. He never again rushed for 1,500 yards. And he sure as hell didn't crack 1,000 yards rushing in a season for the Vikings. In fact his numbers in 3 seasons were pretty sad and not someone you hand 14 players to another team for.
And what made it worse for the Vikings was.... Emmitt Smith was a pick they had traded to the Cowboys. In all the Cowboys got the better end of the deal as they say....and the Vikings...well they went down a few seasons.
Mike Ditka trades EVERY DRAFT PICK for Ricky Williams.
Ricky Williams was considered one of the BEST RB prospects to come outta college in 1999. He was considered on another level with his power and what he had done at Texas. Sure some questioned if he could catch the ball consistantly in the NFL. But he was as some said ...THE MAN.
Whats funny is , in watching the 1999 NFL Draft , the Eagles had a shot at Ricky Williams. And the fans believed heavy that the Eagles would draft Williams. Instead the team drafted Donovan McNabb ! Which led to huge chorus of Eagles fans to boo the selection . Welcome to Philly , Donovan McNabb.
At #5 , the Washington Redskins engineered a hell of a move down. Someone watching wanted Ricky Willaims. That man was Mike Ditka. The coach/Gm of the Saints had the previous year drafted offensive line and the RB happy coach thought Williams would be his #1 guy and become his next Walter Payton ...and carry the Saints to Championships.
Ditka was so entranced by Ricky , he traded not 2 draft picks....not 4.... HE TRADED THE ENTIRE 1999 DRAFT for him ! Then he went ahead and sent Washington the 1st and 3rd rd picks next season. Washington basically shook Ditka's hand for being an idiot ....and agreed.
Even though the teams never really benefited (The Redksins are ran by Dan Snyder.... REST MY CASE) , Ditka lost his job for this stupied move. Ricky was declared a bust in New Orleans and traded away after his 3rd season. Williams has struggled due to his repeated pot busts by the NFL due to his social axanity disorder. , and right now shares the RB job in Miami.
