Default Tell me about the Ultimates

So when I was into comics, there was no such thing as Ultimates. Now that I am getting back into things, there's all this Ultimate this and Ultimates that, and hey look, and Ultimate Marvel forum , so tell me, what exactly is Ultimates? Is it just a series of titles starring different version of character from normal Marvel, separate from main marvel time lines/realities? Do the Ultimate titles tie in with each other somehow? Is there anything I should know about Ultimates if I want to pick up a title?

They're basically reboots of popular characters in a different continuity/universe.
Ultimate Spider-Man gets the most acclaim, Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Fantastic Four are very hit-and-miss by all accounts and Ultimates volumes one and two are excellent.
Ones to be avoided? Anything written by Jeph Loeb.

The Ultimates is a 21st century reimagining of the Avengers, with the feel of a big budget action movie. There are two books--Ultimates 1 and Ultimates 2--and each one is 13 issues long. Very cool stuff, one of my favorite comics of all time.

(There is an Ultimates 3, but avoid it at all costs. It pretty much shits on Ultimates 1 and 2, and even on its own merits it's a crappy story.)

Ultimate Spider-Man is also kind of a 21st century reimagining, although it's about Spider-Man (naturally). It's a mix of retelling and reinterpreting classic Spider-Man characters and stories. Also very good.

Go to your local book store and sit down and read Ultimate Spiderman Volume 1 or Ultimates 1 or Ultimates 2. Those are all solid written stuff. Or go to your local library and search for it, you can probably request it and borrow it if your county or state library system is at all half decent, I know mine was.

Don't pick up any comics that are currently coming out with the Ultimate title, currently Marvel has decided to take the line in a bad direction and nothing good is coming out of this.

Ultimate 1 & 2 are good comics. Ultimate Avengers by Mark Millar should follow in that tradition and bring the Ultimates back to glory

Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away...

Basically, the Ultimate Universe was created, to simplify years and years of bogged down continuity in the regular 616 Universe, so as to attract new readers that didn't want/ have to buy back issues to keep up with what was happening with these characters...

Ultimates are basically the Ultimate version of the Avengers, only it is run by S.H.I.E.L.D. as a government controlled super-powered strike force, all the Ultimate titles are linked only from sharing the same universe, and you don't need to read them all as each title was made to stand on it's own...

However, recent events have kind of changed this, Ultimatum is the first Ultimate book to actually run crossovers in all the other books and making it hard to read just one book, as now if you only read Ultimate Spider-man, you will have to read Ultimatum to know what the heck is going on, the same is said for Ultimate X-Men and Fantastic Four, this never happened before, and IMO is totally the wrong way to go, as fans seem to be jumping ship.

If you read any Ultimates, read Ultimates series 1 & 2 and Ultimate Spider-man as these are gold.

Then after reading Ultimates series 2, I will warn you in advance that reading Ultimates series 3 will be like having a lobotomy or regressing back to being a 2 year old as the writing is on par with the teletubbies and should be avoided at all costs (unless you get them for free). lol

The only book worth your time and money is Ultimate Spider-Man. It's rebooting to a new #1, with a slick new Manga look - so it should be a good place for new readers to jump on board.

Try Instocktrades.com. They don't currently have all of the Ult. Spidey trades but you could try e-mailing them and ask about requesting what it is you want.
