    Default Expanding the United States

Once in history already the majority of the population has favored expansion. Imagine the desire to expand sweeps the nation once again. Weather you favor it or not. Maybe you haven't even thought of it. The argument for expansion won in the end.

Now your are asked to help pick out new lands for expansion. What countries, territories and lands to you think would be valuable choices for the United States? Which ones would be the most logical for us to take? Which ones do you think would be the easiest short and long term? How do you we would acquire each land you suggest?

The simplest expansion would be to make all our territories and protectorates (such as Puerto Rico) into states.

Yep. Take the willing in. That removes the whole 'having to fight for control' bit, and removes any risk of revolution.

That said, if you want more than the protectorates, and went looking for countries willing to surrender control, you'd mostly be taking in poor, uneducated people. Not ideal.

Or, you know, just take Canada,

Not trying to stir shit up, but you may as well have Israel considering the amount of money your government pours into it!

We may as well finish what we started and take the rest of Mexico.

I have mixed feelings about Canada.

While I don't mind invading them, I don't know any Americans who would actually want to live there.

Less violent option (though who wants those) is to start an unimaginably massive landfill project and take as much of the Pacific Ocean as we can.

    Try harder next time.

I can't imagine we'll add any new states any time soon. Fifty is such a nice round number. But if we did, I'd suggest statifying Washington DC, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Anything else wouldn't be looked on kindly by the rest of the universe right now.

You know what would be great, in a cosmic irony sort of way? Statifying England.

Washington DC would be an odd state, as it would be particularly small to get equal representation in the Senate. Also I thought the point was for the capitol to be on "neutral ground".

There are good arguments for making it a state, though. I mean, it's a little weird that there's no representation in the Senate and just this year the possibility was raised of having one representative in the House. And Congress can force through or deny any law they want to. Oh, and people in DC can't vote in national elections.

It's just a really awkward situation.

They still can't vote? I recall learning of that problem in school but assumed it had been dealt with in the last 20 years.
