From Hayseed to X-Man: Cannonball Appreciation

Since I've been in the market for some new trades, here's a question for all the fans; who wrote the best Cannonball? What arcs/runs on which titles feature him doing his thing most prominently?

Opinions will differ but I think it will down to who you personally enjoyed the most, maybe due mindset at the time, first time exposure or even the age. My favorites are definately Fabe, Carey and Claremont (X-Treme X-Men version too).

And his Alan Davis designed costume when Sam returned as a full fledged X-Man under Claremont.

I like the progression of Sam as a character and leader. The peak of this was in the issue of X-Force #19 where he explained the "Open hand vs the Closed Fist" to Xavier. It summed up where his character comes from. He's learned from Xavier, Magneto, and Cable and is in a unique position as a result.

That said, I don't like to see Dani Moonstar sidelined in favor of the aggrandizement of Sam. They were partners and co-leaders with Danielle being cited as being ahead of Cyclop's tactical curve. It makes sense that she was out of the loop for a long time because of her sojourn in Asgard and being undercover but I would like to see some parity btw the 2 again or get her out from under him completely.

I agree. I like Sam, but I'm constantly nervous that writers are going to put Dani down to make Sam look better. Silly, but true.

That was probably me on another thread. Laura’s under age right now so no. But I would all be for it in the future. Sam is gentle and kind, but at the same time he won’t be pushed around, so I think that he would be good for her.

Which begs the question why he doesn't have a bust or a statue yet? I mean even X-23 has a bust for that silly sabertooth costume she was wearing!!!!! So why doesn't Cannonball have a statue?

It is a fair question. I think its because Cannonball has never been on a flagship X-Team. When he originally joined the X-Men the teams weren't really blue and gold anymore. And during the 90s the flagship memorable team is either the blue or, as I would say, the characters from The Animated Series. Then it was the X-Treme team, which was the B-Team to Morrison's New X-Men. then Carey's X-Men which was the B-Team to Whedon.

X-23 was given a push by Marvel. She can not only fall into the X-Men category but the newer Wolverine solo cateogry too. She is a female which there are less known and iconic characters of. But it is a bit odd.
