I'm learning a lot from reading this argument here, I must admit. (The Pro Redcard tiff, natch) Could this be a slight difference in regional (country) philosophy? What I mean is, the American dream basically says if you build it, they will come. I don't think there is anything wrong with someone with no money trying to get started. Everyone who has made it has to start somewhere, somehow - and I think that is Redcard's point. Calling industry professionals names like "idiot" is really bad form though.

But I mostly totally agree with Pro in that this is the way things should be, in a fair world. Hell, even in an unfair but developed world things should be like that. America falls short there, because the thinking is that there is greater freedom in not pinning things down so specifically.

Pro, out of curiousity, did you ever go to the kick ass comic art museum in Brussels? And can you reccommend any in the Netherlands?

I'm siding with Pro on this one.

Also worth noting... if you're looking for someone who does this for hobby, or who's just starting, this might be an excellent place. Because let's face it, nobody goes from hobby to job in a heartbeat. Getting your feet wet, that's what we're dealing with here.

Now once you've made it your job, once it's paying your bills, you're not going to expect to do stuff for free, based on blind faith. I've been paid in the past for work, and that means I'm not going to jump on new projects without getting all the facts first. There was a time when I would have done that, but for me that time is past. Though art might not ever become my work like it is for Pro, I do consider myself slightly above amateur as far as doing the odd job here and there is concerned.
I went and made a webcomic...

Oh absolutely nothing wrong with working for no pay on your own projects, but it is quite unreasonable to assume others to do work for you for nothing. He's not building himself, he's asking others to build with him in hopes of possible one days maybe getting paid. From experience I know that rarely pans out, so I just advised him that he'd have a better chance if he did pay for a good artist. That's all.

Calling industry professionals names like "idiot" is really bad form though.
    For sure

Still planning to but no not yet, we do have a decent comic book museum in my hometown, groningen. Had my work hanging there for a year or so.

Sure, but if you plan to make money from it as Redcard plans to it is more likely you'll get it sold if you pay an artist worth his money. And then we're simply talking about a business investment like in any other business.

sorry Jaye, haven't got it up yet, actually considering going webcomic with it...how's that for getting my feet wet? and I'm on the next page....hard to do a page a day when you got a full time job:rolleyes:
    but here's a good question for debate;
you've done the networking, you've met the people and people know what you do, but you also know other artists.
say someone with a potential project approaches you, but for whatever reason it doesn't interest you, would you recommend another artist or do the project and grit your teeth and remind yourself you're getting paid?

I've done it in the past, and it's been done for me. All part of being a freelancer.

unless you really need the cash, and you know someone that'd be better for the job, just pass it on. I actually did just that for some graphic design work earlier this week.

bah -- where's my angry pm?

    everything Pro said:

i think there's nothing wrong with doing a couple of pages for free for a pitch or something. i would do it but that script would really have to blow my mind. generally speaking, i can't see any reason why somebody wouldn't want to offer at least a symbolic page rate for something like that. i mean, we're talking about 50 bucks for five pages or so. nobody who can afford an internet connection to track down an artist for his book is THAT poor.

anyway, my post was more making fun of the "writers" out there that expect an artist to draw them a complete graphic novel and whatnot with no payment. it just looks like those guys haven't got the slightest clue how much work it is to draw even a single page. means, they don't know much about the medium they want to work in. so why should i waste my time with someone who's obviously not serious about his work and has no respect for mine?

p.s. i suggest another sticky thread anyway: "seeking talent (paid)".

That would be very usefull yes. It's how most sites work when they have job threads.

Another unrelated suggestion on my part would be to sticky Medici's Garden. Newcomers will be more likely to visit.

Definitely not...lol. The only reason we have the one we do have is so that Jay and I have a place to scuttle all the individual threads that pop up.

    More likely.

Man I love making brushes. This one: 2 brushes, if my computer wasn't so slow it would be 10 minutes work tops.

I might do that some time. Think we had a photoshop thread some time ago. Would be a good place as well to put it up.
