Green Lantern, Green Arrow & Black Canary: The "Other" Trinity
Now, my love for Superman knows no bounds. If every other hero in the world stop being published but Superman, I'd be fine (and a lot richer). The appeal of Batman goes without saying and in the right hands Wonder Woman does sometimes live up to her place at the greatest female hero in comics (sadly it's not that often). But I have to admit I'm a little sick of the deification of their "holy trinity." It was one thing when it was a casual description used by fans and professionals alike, but to make it part of the DCU itself just rubs me the wrong way. I simply cannot see everyone else just constantly deferring to them, especially this horrible "star council" like room where only they meet (that it came from Brad Meltzer only helps to submit my negative opinion of him). Being rich and royalty, this might come naturally to Bruce and Diana, but I don't see farmboy Clark going for it. Not to mention the DCU is filled with strong personalities that wouldn't go for it, starting with Hal Jordan, Green Arrow and Black Canary, who form their own Trinity for obvious reasons and in fact are a more organic trio than Clark, Bruce and Diana. Clark and Bruce would never be pals outside of work and thankfully wiser minds prevailed in the Bruce/Diana pairing (oddly the animated series made it work, while in comics it stank of a very limited imagination). Lovers and best friends, the "Other" trinity is actually stronger at its core. And they mirror them pretty well:
Almost limitless Alien Based Might: Superman/Green Lantern Rich Orphan Playboy Seeking Justice In The Streets With Sidekicks: Batman/Green Arrow Super Powered Butt Kicking Woman Rarely Written To Her Full Potential: Wonder Woman/Black Canary
This is also why this whole "other JLA" bothers me. I think these three would naturally and easily slide into the slots left by Superman, Batman & Wonder Woman. There'd be no reason for an offshoot. It'd just be that original JLA that was created post-Crisis where Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman weren't original members.
