Default CBR: Slott Talks Amazing Spider-Man

Dan Slott's latest Amazing Spider-Man story finds the web-slinger teamed with the
Fantastic Four on a cosmic adventure that will have major repercussions for most
of the Marvel Universe. CBR News spoke with Slott about "Face Front."

Spider-Man's cosmic quest in “Face Front” takes him out of New York, but while he's gone, life continues for the members of his supporting cast. “No character is left unturned,” Slott said. “There will be important plot developments with Harry, Aunt May, Dexter Bennett, Jonah, Norah Winters, and Flash Thompson.
    Yay!

    She's coming out of hiding.

“There's also going to be some big stuff for Martin Li a.k.a. Mr. Negative,” Slott continued. “Fred Van Lente, who's a great writer, is working on the 'Dark Reign: Mr. Negative' miniseries coming up in June, and when people read 'Amazing Spider-Man' #590 they're going to see an important development for Martin Li, which is kind of exciting. He's going have some big stuff to do and a very important part to play in coming events.”

This was my favourite part of the article:
One of [Spider-Man editor] Steve Wacker's current passions is making #600 one of the biggest, thickest comics known to man and packing it with all-new material. No reprints!
Lately it seems like every other double, extra or giant sized comic from Marvel contains reprinted material. I'll be very happy to get an extra sized comic that actually features an extra sized story.

I'm excited. Maybe if JJJ becomes mayor, Norah will be there to scrutinize him?
And I hope when you think of me years down the line
You can't find one good thing to say.
And I hope that if I found the strength to walk out
You'd stay the hell out of my way.

Doc Ock is going to be in it, so that's a major plus for it already.

Edit: I love these comments Slott made:

Once “Face Front” finishes, readers won't have to wait too long to see Slott's next “Amazing Spider-Man” issue. The writer will make his return to the title with the giant-size “Amazing Spider-Man” #600. “Spidey #600 is going to be a blast! One of [Spider-Man editor] Steve Wacker's current passions is making #600 one of the biggest, thickest comics known to man and packing it with all-new material. No reprints! Having this giant tome of Spidey-Love barreling at you! I believe we’ve already leaked that I'm working on a Doc Ock story. And I'm going to sound sappy but I don't care, the first comic I read where I kind of got choked up and cried as a kid was the issue with the death of Captain Stacy. Along with his origin that's my favorite Doc Ock story. I really feel honored to be working with such an iconic and important Spider-Man character—and on a centennial issue!

“Since I'm working on issue #600, I owe it the readers to take my best shot at telling the best Spidey and Doc Ock story I can. The page count on this is enormous and there will be an important moment, a landmark in the lives of these characters. Plus there will be plenty of other surprises and guest stars. I'm really trying to tell a big anniversary story. This is me trying to step up and write a movie-worthy script for a Spidey/Doc Ock adventure, and I'm really excited about that.”
Sounds like we're in for one hell of a Doc Ock story

Default One problem with how the story's being pitched...

So, it's a big deal that the Torch, and rest of the FF, don't recall that Spider-Man is Peter Parker. Spoilers for this past week's New Avengers ahead.

But in New Avengers, Pete reveals who he is to folk he's not particularly close to such as Mockingbird, Ms. Marvel, Jessica Jones-Cage, Hawkeye, etc. Admittedly, they delivered an ultimatum that he either had to do so or leave the Avengers, but if he's willing to trust these folk with his id, he should be willing to trust the FF and Johnny, who he knows much better.

Like most of Slott's interviews, that one has got me all sugar rushed and ready for Wednesday.

Norah Winters was the first supporting castmember introduced since last January that seemed to have some true personality in their veins (and I say that actually having liked most of the new additions like Bennet, Gonzalez and Cooper), should be interesting to see how different writers like Dan handle her this early in her development as a character.

And I'll be crossing my fingers that Li (or especially that not even worth mentioning loser Declun, Lets pray the annual wasn't foreshadowing anything) isn't made mayor.

If I'm right though and the big thing that effects the marvel universe in facefront is the new mayor and gets Peter to go on a 24/7 Spider-Man spree, I'd imagine chances are the mayor is someone Peter doesn't see eye to eye with, I couldn't see that being Li since Peter isn't aware of his less positive side.

It's not that I don't like Mr. Negative, I just get the feeling that I want to see them do something different, a different direction with him and go with a different choice.

Of course, you all know what my choice would be.

Not sure how this would jive with their own book, but perhaps something happens to the FF where they are no longer in NYC, or even on Earth? Maybe Spidey is the only one who makes it back, and for the foreseeable future, he feels obligated to patrol the city 24/7 to make up for their loss.

Good. Then that means the marriage will be returning soon.

Seriously, though, it's not being retconned out. It still happened, but the "real world" needs some kind of logical explanation for the holes Mephisto punched in continuity with his shenanigans. Mephisto is, and always will be, the one pulling the strings.

Me thinks not. That would create even more continuity headaches than there already are. And why bother going through with that storyline like that only to erase it completely later on? It would basically be admitting such an event was a mistake and they're just going to pretend it didn't happen and just go away.

As I've said before, something else has to be put in place of Mephisto in the altered timeline for things to make sense.

I really don't think It's that they're trying to erase OMD, it's that it's a necessity for those course of events having had to have changed after the deal was made.

Mephisto alters reality where everything turned out how he intended but with no evidence that he was ever involved in Peter's life to begin with whatsoever. It would have been incredibly sloppy for him to do it any other way.

im inclined to disagree... but if you want to think mephisto is behind everything even after the writer says no.... thats up to you.

it would be admitting it was a bad idea while keeping its results.... i see no problem with it.... but to each his own.... weve been down this road before....
