Default CBR: Under the Hood with Judd Winick, Part II

In second of a two-part interview with Judd Winick, the "Batman" writer speaks extensively about how he was originally handed "Battle for the Cowl," and wrote two issues before he was taken off the project.

As long as he doesn't bring back the "scarebeast"
"John Stewart. LAME! ...this guy having a ring is like giving the batmobile to a blind old woman with her left leg in a cast."

"Pym biting Blobs head off seems like something that would have happened when i was ten years old and playing with action figures."

"i always assumed that [the blob] had the same powers as his 616 counterpart because, if simply being a huge fat guy was enough to be considered a mutant then there sure are a lot of mutants in 'real life'. "

I think he sealed me not getting the book when he said in part 1 that he was going to ignore the bulk of Batman's "detective" qualities, and just have him running around kicking ass.

Bad, bad, baaad choice of words, Judd. Or maybe just honest.

Either way, I am very much considering replacing Batman with B&R on my pull list until Bruce returns, since I have a feeling that B&R will end up being the defacto main book until then. Anyone else share that feeling?

Judd W.: "“We’re going to take 1/8 of the story you are working on, just this part, this part right here, and that’s the part we’re doing for ‘Battle for the Cowl.’ You take the rest of what you’re working on and put it in the monthly. "

Thanks, JW, for so fundamentally degrading "Battle for the Cowl"! This is so silly.

    I'm definitely getting Batman.

I don't like the idea of Didio taking BFTC from Winick, and giving it to Daniel because he wanted less of a story, and to sell it in more parts, at all.

IMO as a writer Judd is very hit or miss. I liked Judd's run on Green Arrow until Hester left. I liked his first 15 issues on Outsiders. I loved his Superman/Shazam: First Thunder series. The rest of his stuff I really didn't care for including his previous run on Batman. I was on the fence about getting the Batman title depending on who was in the cotsume and when I heard Judd was writing it I assumed it was Jason . But in other interviews it sounds like it will be Dick .

But after this two part interview I have no interest in the book at all. In the past Judd came across as a really nice guy in interviews but in this one he came across as arrogant & bitter.

Wow, now I get to pass on Judd's god awful writing and Ed Benes work which is not to my taste. I was initially kinda irritated to be missing Tony Daniel's art but now this has become the easiest book to not buy in a loooong time. A token BS meeting between the new Batman and the rest of the DC makes this even more of a yawn.

I'll probably be dropping Batman if they can't get a serious writer.

Pretty cool. I didn't know he was the original writer for Battle for the Cowl. I mean, back then I was among those who speculated that he was and then got real surprised it was Tony Daniel. Guess this explains that.

I'm looking forward to his final chapter for BftC. It sounds like it'll mainly be emotional character moments, and he's pretty strong with writing that stuff.

I like his takes on Alfred and Gordon too. This should be good.

I hope we're not going to be in for months and months of complaints that an event mini series is crossing over into a regular title. We just got through all the complaints when Infinite Crisis unexpectedly tied into Superman titles and Wonder Woman.

Mind you, you're only getting one side of the story.

Why? I don't understand what point you're trying to make.
