Default Anyone else have any heroes that have truly dissapointed them?

I grew up idolizing Chuck Norris the actor, martial artist, man and novelist. Words can't adequately explain how disappointed and disheartened I was yesterday when I read that he wants Texas to succeed from the Union and that someone like him ought to be the President of the newly independent Texas nation.

    Tarzan.

I grew up reading Russ Manning´s Tarzan comics and absolutely loved them. They shaped who I am creatively.

But the source material by Burroughs is filled with pure racist venom.

Yeah, I really couldn't believe that. Sounded as "out there" as most Chuck Norris facts.

I've never been one to idolize heroes, though, particularly in seeing someone who I could follow their ideals or anything like that. I'm just not the type to people on the pedestal (since they always tend to disappoint).

I don't necessarily have heroes, but people I admire to a small degree have disappointed me very much for stupid things they've said in interviews. Or from people in my life that have made me sad because of their previously unknown attitudes on certain subjects.

In short, yes. Sometimes the people I like to think are on their way to being good role models end up disappointing me the most.

Pete Townshend. Great guitarist, but he's a pedophile who used his money and power to make the charges against him go away.

It's more the other way around for me.

I'm often impressed by people I abhor. I can admire Ann Coulter's humor, and read an article she did about being a fan of the Grateful Dead. And she was completely charming. So long as the discussion isn't about politics (and I think people shouldn't be so quick to bash their head together over politics anyway), she would probably a fun person to hang out with.

And there was the time both she and George Carlin were guests on Leno. Beforehand there was all this talk that they were going to get into this huge bitch-out with each other. But they were totally polite, joking around and that impressed me.

I tend not to look up to others as that tends to backfire.

My father, but understanding the triumphs and shortcomings of your own parents is part of growing up.

Phil Spector, Mel Gibson, Pete Townshend, and yes, absolutely Julius Schwartz. And Dave Sim, I guess.

He was alleged to have been involved in sexual harrassment, I presume that's what she means. (I say "alleged" but only because, AFAIK, nobody directly said it him rather than refuted it)
