You can't tell the copyright on Sherlock Holmes expired in the last year or so, can you?

Seriously - books, TV shows, movies, comics... Sherlock flood...

The copyright on Holmes expired in 1976. The flood of books started then, and many attempts have been made at turning Holmes into a comic since. Renegade published a nice series called the Casebook of Sherlock Holmes back in the 80's and Eternity did several minis that weren't too bad.

That said, this new series from Dynamite looks VERY good.

This looks interesting and might well be worth picking up. I love me some Sherlock Holmes but I find that often the way that Holmes and Watson are portrayed in comic books to be incongruous with how they are in the Arthur Conan Doyle stories. I just find it hard to reconcile the Holmes of the original stories with their comic book counterparts at times.

Having said that, there have been some good comic book adaptations in the past, just not many of them. So I'm hoping that this new series from Dynamite will be one of the “good ones” and do the characters justice.

I might actually pick this up.

I have some of those Casebook of Sherlock Holmes issues and wouldn't mind seeing new works.

It's not like DC or Marvel are cluttering up much of my pull list these days.

So, did anyone pick up issue #1 of this series?

I did and I have to say that I thought it was utterly awesome. As I noted earlier in this thread, I'm a big fan of the original Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes stories but I'm usually rather disappointed by the way the characters are portrayed in the comic book medium. I find that more often than not, writers totally fail to capture the essence of Holmes, Watson and their world.

There are no such concerns with issue #1 of Dynamite's new Sherlock Holmes series though. Leah Moore and John Reppion really appear to have a handle on the characters and for once, this comic book incarnation of Sherlock Holmes doesn't seem incongruous with Conan Doyle's stories.

I've also gotta say that Aaron Campbell artwork is fantastic throughout...a real treat to the eyes and perfectly captures the subtly sinister ambience of Doyle's Victorian London. John Cassaday's cover is a thing of beauty too...although I'm not so bowled over by his cover for the forthcoming issue #2 but that’s just a matter of personal taste.

Anyway, all in all, a really promising start to the series…I've already added this title to my pull list. Issue #2 can't come out soon enough for me.

I picked it up, being a Huge Sherlock Holmes fan, I like it alot. It seemed very fanservicey in the good kind of way. The Mention of Colonel Moran couldn't come in a better time, Not only did it set this story as happening a year after The Empty House, but it also I had the exact same thought and is just feels great when that happens to me. And was it me or did Holmes and Watson looked alot like Jeremy Brett and David Burke?

It's only part one though. They still have plenty of time to piss off the Sherlockians out there (And if you think that Comic book fans are hard to please...).

Yeah, I spotted the reference to The Empty House, that was a nice touch and exactly the sort of thing that has already indicated that this series is going to be a cut above the majority of Sherlock Holmes comics.

Hmmm...I don't know, I can't say that I noticed that but you might be right. I did think that Aaron Campbell's rendition of Holmes was very much in keeping with Sidney Paget's original illustrations from The Strand magazine though.

It came out last Wednesday, I believe. I picked it up on Thursday, which is "new comic day" here in the UK. I think I'm right in saying that it came out a few weeks early. I wasn't expecting it to hit the stands until mid-May, so it was a very pleasent surprise to find it in my order last week.

Hey, nice one Aaron, I was really blown away by your art in issue #1. As I said in my post above, I felt that it really captured the murky and subtly sinister Victorian world that the characters inhabit incredibly well.

Plus, from a purely personal point of view, I love that there's so much detail in your backgrounds. I love comic book art where, after you've taken in the main characters, you can look past them and get lost in all the detail of the background.

I can't wait for issue #2 to come out, keep up the good work!

Is it me or does Sherlock Holmes look a bit like Sir Anthony Hopkins?
