I think they missed the point about DC's graphic novels....it's not about Y versus Powers or 100 Bullets versus Criminal but rather...DC has more single graphic novels that tell bad ass complete stories. I can't think of a good single-trade marvel story outside of Spider-Man: Blue...DC has tons.

and maybe the reverse is true as well, I tend to get more marvel serials than DC serials, and I get more minis/single graphic novels from DC than Marvel.

They were talking about Spider-man, who isn't really Spider-man anymore. They did a strange story that seemed like a What-if story instead of seeming like a big story where everyone finds out the big thing. It was obvious that it didn't matter because it's on to Civil War #3 and it's shocking matter that didn't matter.

The problem is they had they're main good guy do stupid and really terrible things and then blew the last big thing you can do with him. So, now... there's nothing left to do. What's going to happen that's so great?

Annihilation doesn't come to mind? WWH was great. House of M is really good, especially in trade format. Fallen Son is great as well.

    Default Crossovers

One of the biggest topics of conversation focused on "event fatigue." Fans complained that Marvel's unrelenting barrage of event comics and tie-ins made it impossible to afford a regular comic book habit in the midst of a recession.

"My job is to make you wanna read comics every month," Brevoort replied. "And sort of what you're saying is, 'You're making the comics too good! They're too exciting! I have to buy them every month!' I'm very happy about this! This is what it's supposed to be!""

Actually no, Mr. Brevoort, what it does is render the monthly books almost incomprehensible if you don't buy the stupid crossovers. Its not that people want to buy these crossover events its that they almost have to if they want to know what's going on. I've been buying Uncanny X-Men for more than 25 years now, and I skipped House of M and some of the other Mutant events. Although I can follow the main story, there are references to things that happened in the crossover events that I don't get but are having impacts on the stories. I'm guessing I'm screwed this summer as I have no interest in Dark Reign or any other stupid Extra-Special-Super-Summer-Event-that-will-changes-things-forever-this-time-honest!.

Brevoort is partially right, I have been buying more comics, but thanks to Final Crisis, OMD and Secret Invasion I'm actually buying more indies at the expense of my Big Two purchases.

if you stop buying event books, they'll stop making event books.

seeing that numbers for SI, like #1 sold about 300k the first printing and that every issue of it was in the top 10 of 2008 for example, I don't think it's gonna stop any time soon.

    Thumbs down

One female audience member felt insulted by Brand New Day, saying it essentially told her that married characters couldn't be interesting. "I'm a woman. I want to get married some day. I don't like being told that I'm going to be boring when I'm married."

the woman who said this must be THE stupidest woman on the face of the Earth. Why would anyone think that, coming from a comic book?!? Unbelievable...

The only reason Marvel and DC do event books is because event books make more money--because of hype. By their very nature, the artistic quality of these stories are inferior and every editor at Marvel and DC knows this. They are also artistically lazy concepts and much easier to pull off (just throw a bunch of heroes together) than to put much thought and effort behind a storyline.

I don't buy event books and I wish other fans would do the same. This is why I'm not going to complain about them. Until the fanbase stops acting like mindless drones I say they deserve what they get. That being said, Marvel and DC should care a little bit more about art (in the greater sense of the word) than they do. Let's face it, the major money is made on toys and video games nowadays. I see very few excuses to continue publishing mindless event comics given that fact.

She must think that all things written in comics are gospel.

Brevoort must be insane, comparing Criminal and Powers to the quality of/in Vertigo's titles. Thats like comparing Youngblood to Watchmen!

Reason number #1653 why I've lost any and all respect for Brevoort over the years:

"Brevoort prefaced his next comment with his desire to not turn the panel into a DC bashing. "I think so much of that has to do with [DC] just flailing around randomly," he hypothesized. "And if you flail around randomly, eventually you're gonna hit something. [Sometimes] they hit something and it works.""

Wait... he didn't want to bash DC? I'm surprised considering what he's said there and many, many, MANY other times in the past and how he's managed to turn it into an artform.
