In one issue of The New Mutants, Illyana was hurling mystical bolts of energy at S'ym while on Earth, but several issues later during "The Demon Bear Saga," Illyana stated that her magicks were restricted on Earth to the use of her Soulsword.

There was no actual reason given for this, so taking the 'deux ex machina' plot point aside, I suppose that Illyana's magicks were more potent in Limbo, but for whatever reason - perhaps Belasco or the Elder Gods - her magicks were severely restrained on Earth. (Remember, Belasco once kept his teleportation spells hidden from Illyana, in Storm and Illyana: Magik, and actually prevented the Darkchild from teleporting in New X-Men's "The Quest for Magik" storyline - a tactic that necessitated the Darkchild training Pixie to teleport.)

Perhaps now that Illyana is alive once more, her spells, no longer bound by whatever forces prevented her from accessing them previously, will be at her disposal whenever outside of Limbo.
This would be so frakkin wonder-full!...Hopefully at the end of X-Infernus, Illyana is absolute ruler of Limbo once more with all the might and power inherited from Belasco which *should* enable her to use her sorcery while on earth...She'll make an awesome Sorceress Supreme, wielding both Black and White Magic.

...and even if she looses complete control of Limbo, and is cast out...which, considering all the bad memories, is not necessarily a bad thing...then hopefully she would still be able to cast spells and work magic...it's been quite some time since the x-folk had an A-level sorceress in any cast...and I SO love a bit of magic here and there in my stories, quite!

I wouldn't mind her having an aversion to magic, personally. I mean, magic is what caused all of her problems to begin with. And I don't know how X-Infernus will be resolved but I think it wouldn't mind Illyana being hesitant to use her magical powers, if they are restored/stay intact.
    Soulsword? Sure. Slice away.
Spells? I could go either way.
Teleportation via stepping discs? A MUST

That's actually my real theory for why she couldn't cast her spells on earth. She was too frightened of her own power and deliberately limited her powers. That would be why she could cast energy blasts with more punch than either Sam or Roberto pack in issue 14, the first time she uses her powers out of Limbo, but ten issues later she couldn't cast any spells (except that she did whenever the editors or writers needed it for plot reasons, see issue 52, where she magically changes the decor of her room to show Magneto how evil she is). Once she was active in the New Mutants she had to cut off her powers to keep herself from missusing them. I also think that that is why the soulsword could only affect magical creatures; it could do so much more, but she wouldn't let it.

I had two theories about her magical use while outside of Limbo.

    1) I thought she felt it was less likely to succeed (spells) while on earth, so why bother? Why not just head to Limbo and do it there where it was bound to succeed.

    2) I thought maybe it was fear. Fear that continual use of magic would corrupt her further and quicker. But while in Limbo, it made everything easier, so she had few reservations about casting spells etc there.

Your second reason is about the same as mine; I only added the idea that she limited the soulsword as well.

    So.
    We think similarily. Intriguing...

Perhaps you should have the open seat in the Magik Illuminati.
The other chairs would/should be occupied by Darkchylde , Mullhollanddriver and Xaviersmisprint

We require a fifth to make a pentagram.

Hmmm...... I'll take the soul slingshot. That'll sting Mephisto's buns. Speaking of tall, red, and ugly, when's the next meeting of our pentagram with the lords of Hell?

    Either May 14th, 1988 or August 6th, 2013.
Yay for Limbo and its wonky sense of time.

Either way I'll be 2 years younger, but our good old Magik will be the same age she is now.

Hela's not invited though, right? If I see her she's going down, courtesy of my new soul slingshot.

Default Speaking of dates, I have a question that has long bothered me

In the first appearance of Illyana ("Do you believe in Magik?" NM15) Sam mentions that Illyana's birthday was coming up as a means of including her in the party they are going to throw for Stevie Hunter. Gven that it was winter and there were no sign (that I saw, anyway) of holiday-esque decorations, anyone want to take a crack at an estimated birthday for her? I know the comics hate to hit dates like that, but what's the opinion of the room?

I agree completely, but I am in high doubt they will do it if the intend to return Illyana to the New Mutants. It would be too difficult to support her there and in a stand alone title without sending ALL the NM on a mystic path.

Default Well, I hate to say it, but I dissent here

It may look her look cooler, but the sword has been the symbol of authority and I really don't see Illyana abandoning it (it IS her SOUL after all). Besides, the sword is more of a lethal beauty, gorgeous to look at while absolutely deadly to the core, like her, able to protect or kill. The axe has one purpose and one purpose only, to brutally chop things to bits. Doesn't quite fit, IMHO.
