Hah! I just found it funny to see her soulsword clank against the most unmystical artifact in the Marvel Universe.

Hey guys, I want to get into Magik's character/story but I don't know where to start. Can you guys list off any essential reads for her? Preferably stories from the 90s to now. Stories beyond that time seem dated to me although I'm open to suggestions if they're SUPER essential.
Her pre-90's "dated" appearances are her origns and subsequent death.
She didn't really "exist" in the 90's.
And it wasn't until just a few years back that she resurrected and reintegrated into the X-verse.
New X-Men: Quest for Magik summarizes much of her history and resurrection well enough.
X-Infernus documents HER quest to reclaim her humanity.
And of course, New Mutants, under Zeb Wells provides an outstanding "finale" of sorts to said Quest, showcasing some of the best aspects of Magik's character (her devious and calculating and questionable moral stance)

"Um, blah, blah, blah. And, Girl Power. Feminism, d'you know what I mean?"
Alright cool, I'll check these out. I know she's in UXM right now. Is it worth reading for her alone? I checked out the first couple issues and she didn't really play much of a role in anything if I remember correctly. Does she get more spotlight later on in the series up until the AvX tie-in right now? Also about the New Mutants. Does that mean stay away from anything NOT Zeb Wells?
Oh, I also wanted to ask but are her stories worth reading? I'm trying to branch out into new characters and things but I'm trying to avoid bad writing and typical generic storytelling. The idea of her soul getting taken and being in control of Limbo seemed like an interesting concept to me. However I'm worried that in the end, it could be a generic "light vs dark" story. I'm looking for stuff that makes the reader think, psychological thrillers. Please tell me that Illyana isn't just some two dimensional cookie cutter character with a tinge of "evil"

Illyana is a walking psychological thriller. You shouldn't be disappointed.
Her older stories, especially her origin mini and the first New Mutants series under Claremont, are worth reading. Her role in the current Uncanny run is interesting. She's had some great power feats and an interesting narrative focused on her in the last several issues. She's supposedly going to be a main focus in the upcoming arc.
Magik is a compelling dark fantasy/horror character with layers and layers and layers. She also has a wicked sense of humor. Again, you shouldn't be disappointed!

Illyana's role in Uncanny is limited, yes. It's still worth it for Illyana to me, though, because her role is spot-on for her character.
My advice would be to check out the Fear Itself issues of Uncanny X-Men --those were very important for Illyana, and they'll give you a chance to enjoy Kieron Gillen's writing on the book, which is aces. (Sadly, we're still waiting on a softcover collection of that arc. Get on it, Marvel!)

Okay so suppose I was open to all stories involving her including the super old ones. What are the essential reads? Are they easily obtained i.e. collected in trades or available digitally?
So far on my list of eventual purchases, I have:
New X-Men: Quest for Magik
X-Infernus
New Mutants (Under Wells and Claremont)
Fear Itself: Uncanny X-Men
If I may ask, what issues of New Mutants were by Claremont?
