Both ideas are bad. They are taken very seriously, but the first two movies were every bit as goofy as the following. Powerless Clark walking back from the Fortress, that was off the top of my head. And I also don't get why some people harp on budget or effects...as someone born after Quest For Peace living in 2013, I don't think very much from those films hold up visually.

Though I dug all the slow, trippy Marlon Brando stuff from the first film.

Stamp basically had to carry "II" by himself. They even gave us a fight scene that wasn't just Clark acting like a punk in a diner or destroying the city. I think they should have gone with red Kryptonite and Brainiac, but those are minor details. The relationship with Lana was charming, more respectful to the title character, and had no crap like "Can You Read My Mind?" or giving up super powers at the worst possible time. Every lead role was just done well.
Yay - thanks for going against the crowd.

Richard Pryor wasn't a perfect fit, but Superman III is still a very enjoyable film.

Last time I tried to watch Superman: The Movie I couldn't believe how long and tedious the Marlon Brando stuff was - and then later it had some good moments, but they were offset by the terrible comedy real estate Luthor, the incompetent Otis and Lois Lane's terrible poetry. Not a bad film, but definitely a flawed one.

One of the things I like about Superman the Movie is that it held my interest right from the beginning - from the expanse of Krypton, to the scenes in Smallville and then later to Metropolis. When Chris changes to Superman that was just iciing on the cake with that now classic helicopter scene in which he makes his public debut as Superman. Its a timeless classic and rightly so. Superman III had nice moments too - particularly Lana Lang. The chemistry between her and Clark was evident plus it was kind of cool to see Bad Superman vs Clark Kent. Sure effects have gotten better but unless you have a cast who really embody the characters and can bring that to screen essentially youre left with a hollow movie (as seen in Superman Returns).
