As far as defenses go...I've had people imply that I'm not a 'real' Spider-Man fan since I haven't bought/read any Amazing Spider-man comics since BND. The fact that I still collect back issues, Spider-Girl, Marvel Adventures Spidey and Ultimate Spidey apparently isn't enough, I should be buying comics that I'm not interested in or else risk having my 'true fan' card revoked.
Oh….I must say I’m surprised at how readily you boys bastardized your code of ethics in order to justify a morally dubious decision. That was very grown up of you. - Cornfed

Another one that keeps coming up is that Joe Quesada must not be happy in his marriage because he feels that Spider-Man is a more interesting character when he's single, or even that people generally have more dramatically interesting lives before they get married.

On a related note, claiming that if you don't like MJ or the marriage then you're probably a misogynist.

Making claims about the personal lives of people you don't even know because you don't like something they say about a fictional character goes beyond "rude".

    Complaint:
"Why did it have to change from the current status quo! That's just proof that nothing ever changes!"
"if you ever disagree it means that you are wrong."

Felt the need to clarify here. I agree with Matt for those who were straight up calling other posters misogynist -- however, those who were arguing MJ's treatment has misogynist tendencies, that it might be revealing about where we stand from a larger sociological perspective -- I think there's some validity and worth in exploring that argument.

My problem with that is that it requires knowing the motivation of the writer. I might find a story written from the point of view of a Nazi interesting to write, but that doesn't mean I'm a Nazi. Sure, you could look at trends and speculate on what they might mean in a general sense (something like "Women In Refrigerators", for example). But when someone points the finger at Joe Quesada or any other writer and says, "He's a misogynist based on what he did to this fictional character" there's just no real foundation for that.

Not necessarily. People do things all the time without being aware of their potential underlying interpretations. Two hundred years ago, using a racial epitaph wouldn't have made anyone blink -- that doesn't mean the user wasn't being racist (shoot, just read the newspaper accounts dealing with Jack Johnson if you want to see what was tolerated once upon a time).

I'm not saying it can't mean that. Of course it could. I'm just saying that it doesn't necessarily mean that, and in that case it's an accusation that shouldn't be thrown around.

Be why I used the word "exploring". I agree it's out of line to accuse another poster, or even an author, of being out and out misogynist; but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be able to look at and explore the notion that there are social tendencies that, for lack of a better way of putting this, filter into the work.

Complaint i always thought was a bit off..... in regards to nothing changes except the marriage in old stories.....

I would need to take Hallucinogenic Drug #32 before i could begin to understand the leap in logic it takes to get what they are trying to say.

Ive often found that one silly based on the fact that it...

    A) admits that one sees the leap in logic and comprehends what one is suppose to accept

    B) half insults the person whom it is used on.... basic implication is that they are on Hallucinogenic Drug #32 and that's why they find it acceptable.

    C) poster has already considered what needs to be accepted and decided they dont like it, not that they dont understand it.

Except you've gotta do it carefully, or you could end up convincing others that someone's a misogynist when they're not.

Though I did see a lot of ageism in the "Aunt May's old and worthless. About damn time she died." posts.
