A nice twist on the Robin legend was in the last Batman animated series, when they made Tony Zucco a child of the circus as well.
But no mention of how the pre-Crisis Dick Grayson still had living family or how post-Crisis he was given Eastern European Gypsy roots?
Correction:
The original Nightwing was Superman himself. He and Jimmy Olsen went to Kandor and became Nightwing and Flamebird (since Superman didn't have powers in Kandor). They later passed the identities to Van Zee and Ak-Var (Van just happens to look exactly like Superman).
It doesn't matter what the writer, artist, or editor had in mind when they created it, or what they said in an interview;
all that matters is what is on the page.
