What do you prefer, DC comics predominately fictional city/settings or Marvel's real world settings? What do you prefer? Do you prefer fictional cities like Metropolis, Gotham, Star City, or real world cities like New York or LA? I was wondering because I was reading a thread which asked which comic company was better; Marvel or DC? I remember, when I used to like Marvel more then DC, one of the reasons was because Marvel used to use real world settings. I no longer feel this way.
I realize both DC and Marvel use their own unique style when defining how they shape the settings in their universe. Both DC comics and Marvel use real world settings and fictional settings. For example Marvel has stories based in NY and Genosha and DC has cities like Washington DC and Metropolis. The thing is DC comics seems to use fictional cities alot more then Marvel. I was wondering the use of real world cities somehow contributed to the overall popularity of Marvel.
Real world settings are great cause you can identify with them. The problem with real world settings though, is that it causes too many heroes to be grouped into one region. For example notice how a large majority of Marvel comics heroes are grouped in NYC. There are too many heroes in one area.
With DC you can create two versions of NYC (i.e. Gotham and Metropolis) one for Superman and one for Batman. This allows you to use the same city and avoid concentrating too many heroes in one area.
I asked this exact same question in the DCU forum as well, but someone pointed out that most likely fictional cities would win because the thread was a DCU forum.
To balance out the results I wanted to post this thread on this forum (i.e. MU forum).
