They're scientists, Allan. They know what they're doing.
Before delving any further into the GCD, I would just like to announce that if this isn't '70s Kirby, I don't want to live anymore.
The (apparent) fact that it isn't from 2001 or The Eternals already has me pretty damned morose.
Don't make me morose.
You wouldn't like me when I'm morose.

I tend to split superhero comics fans into "People who like Krypto" and "People who don't like Krypto."
Basically, if you miss the wonder of a dog flying around in a little Superman cape, you're in the wrong hobby.

Kirby Krackles for sure...and a bit of Kirby machinery, or close facsimiles thereof. I scanned FF and Thor for this, but wonder if it isn't a deliberate bit of obfuscation. Frenz and Giffen, to name just two, did a very passable KK...

Actually, if I were to just see that panel out of context, I'd assume it was from Image's current Godland -- Tom Scioli does a hellacious Kozmic Kirby.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, I love Giffen's Kirby-channeling stuff from those days, especially as seen in The Defenders, whereas the art he's turned out since he decided to appropriate Argentina's Jose Munoz's style wholesale* has been ... not particularly appealing.
*The most civil equivalent of "flagrantly & shamelessly rip off" that I can come up with, at least as I type this.

Here is the second clue.
Hint: It was published in the 80s.
They're scientists, Allan. They know what they're doing.
and much as I hate to admit that I recognised the High Evolutionary's shoulder, I did so it was relatively easy to pin it down (the answer, not the shoulder)
so that is X-Men Annual 12 from 1988 and that was Art Adams doing the Kirby Krackles, much to my surprise
Nothing to see here folks, go home
Here is the first clue. Sorry for the small scan.
Hint: It is not a big two book.
They're scientists, Allan. They know what they're doing.
It's not often that I can ID one of these on first glance at the first clue. This is The Owl No. 2.
Here is the first clue to the next cover.
Hint: It is a Dell comic.
