I really don't understand how anyone other than an acolyte of Buffy can disagree so vehemently with Aaron's handling of Kitty but love what Whedon did with her.

Yeah, I'd always heard about how Buffy was inspired by Kitty, but then I watched a few episodes and just didn't get it.

Astonishing X-Men was my entry point to 616 X-Men, so I have a soft spot for it. I dislike Kitty more and more with every reread. I never get the Buffy comparisons, as she went through seven years of solid character development, unlike Kitty in AXM who didn't do much of anything (except "grow up", I guess). The only thing they have in common is quips, a silly name and the ability to be underestimated by everyone because of their small bodies.

Aaron is doing everything Whedon did except worse. Kitty was a part of the team in AXM, whereas the JGS frat party doesn't give her the time of day and treats her like a housewife while they drink and relax. AXM Kitty went up against Cassie Nova's Hellfire Club, while Aaron's Kitty runs away. AXM Kitty completely changed the directives of a giant sentinel while Aaron's Kitty finds Iceman's dick more important than discussing solutions to the Phoenix.

And she still cries about being immature and needing to grow up.

Even when you completely hate Whedon's Kitty, he at least elevated a D-list character with a small cult fanbase to the forefront. Aaron is using her elevated status to make Iceman legit.

I can't say I was ever the least bit interested in Buffy, so I can't really comment on that, but it's probably best to change the subject so as to avoid the same tired discussions we've held repeatedly. I'm sure we can all agree that next year will be better for Kitty regardless.
