In this case, the hardcovers will not offer any "upgrade" over the TPBs.... but I went with the HC for one main reason - the HCs should simply last longer. For an all-time classic that's important. I expect them to be read extensively.

What NCatron said is what motivated me for the HCs.

Anyway, I was able to compare these side by side by side - original Vertigo TPB, HC and new edition TPB. No difference in paper quality or printing, so you should get whatever you can afford!

Thanks for looking! I don't have a comic book store near me, so this helps a lot. I'm going to get the hardcovers.

Shortly after that, I dropped Swamp Thing and never went back. I'm glad that I missed both the Mark Millar and Nancy Collins runs on that title.

Nancy A Collins's stuff was fun, but inconsequential.

Mark Millar's run on the other hand is excellent. The best run on the comic outside of Alan Moore - and even Millar's best bits are better than Moore's worst bits.

And then Brian K Vaughan, Andy Diggle and Joshua Dysart all did pretty bad runs.
I agree Brian, Andy and Joshua did quite bad where Moore and Millar were terrific on ST and who thinks Bernie Wrightson did the best art?

Wasn't Morrison a ghost writer for Millar's run?

He co-wrote Millar's first arc, after which Millar continued solo until the end of the series.

    Thanks.

Mark Millar has been practically blacklisted from my buying lists, but if it's in the library I'll check it out.

I like Bernie Wrightson's art, but if I'm honest, Bissette&Tottleben, Veitch&Tottleben and Tottleben all did better for me (I'm sure you can see the theme). Hester & Demulder also did some good work. They changed styles a but, but the first major arc had some wonderfully nightmarish art that really made Swamp Thing feel like a horror book for the first time since the earlier part of Moore's run.

And for what it's worth, the quality improved when Millar went solo.

I'm with you. This thread actually inspired me to pick up the Veitch run - should be here next week! Excited.

Worst run of any comic ever? Ouch! :-)

Although it won't go down in history as the world's best, the Quest for the Elements wasn't bad; it was entertaining enough that I didn't regret purchasing it. Maybe only Doug and I liked those issues. Ha Ha Ha :-)
