Default CBR: Lying In The Gutters - Oct 13, 2008

It's a big one this week, as Rich has early word on who the next Doctor Who may be, big developments with Zuda Comics properties, more "Top Ten" in the works, the Swipe File and much more in LYING IN THE GUTTERS.

Can we just change the title of the column to "Dr. Who, No Heroics, and other British Television News?" I remember when Johnston wrote a comics rumor column and tend to expect such. Perhaps it's my own expectations that are askew, but maybe this would fit in better over at Newsarama since CBR at least maintains a pretense towards remaining a comics-focused site.

Uhhhh, OK, so one story about Doctor Who outweighs the rest of the content which is all comic book or super hero TV show based? That's nuts.

If that Zuda stuff pans out, that's an awesome development and really turns Zuda into an incredible IP factory.

Well, Millar does have a sexy Scottish accent. So can you blame Bendis? Plus, licking goats is sexy.

Meanwhile... whoo. What a packed column. Zuda (owned by AOL Time Warner) is being used as an IP farm for Cartoon Network shows (also owned by AOL Time Warner). Not sure if that's good or bad. How much of the rights do the creators retain? I remember Rich commenting about Vertigo getting pressure from up above about cutting back the creator owned aspects.

As for Doctor Who... eh. I'll just wait until I see the eps. I rather don't care about such rumors. Though Gaiman writing an ep is something I can't wait to see. Plus I've really enjoyed Tennant in the role.

Oh and Antarctic Press making a Sarah Palin Swimsuit Comic? Wow. And here I thought Pirates vs Ninjas was a cheap gimmick. I like a couple of their titles, but most of the time the books Antartic has seem to be cheap bandwagon jumpers. And don't get me started on their language theft of the term manga. Or the works of the aptly named Ben Dunn.

Meanwhile, would Bendis be upset or just turned on by that Spider-woman tickle soft porn movie? Oddly, I saw it on another message board a while back. I forget the other characters they had. I got the link buried somehwere. Never thought I'd see it in LITG. Ha.

I'm a little curious why DC would try and reacquire the rights to "Captain Action", when it didn't make it past 6 issues the first time.

Default ACTION COMICS (DC's CAPTAIN ACTION)

    'Five' issues, actually. ;)

*If* the fact that DC is interested in reacquiring CAPTAIN ACTION, I assume that it would be because the last take on the character was done over 40 years ago, and there would be plenty of interesting things to do with this wonderful, nostalgic icon. How many 40 (and 50, and even older) year-old characters have been brought back and successfully revamped? Countless. If there's any truth to the fact that DC is interested in the character, I'd love to see them begin by collecting the Jim Shooter/Wally Wood/Gil Kane 5-issue series. That'd be a wonderful starting point! There's a lot of beautiful artwork in that fistful of comics by two of the Silver Age's most popular artists.

"Jew-Jitsu" is a joke used in Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. It's what the monks invented to teach Jesus because he refused to hit others and thus wouldn't learn Kung Fu.

It makes sense in the context of the story. I swear.

Paterson Joseph would be an inspired choice for the Doctor. There's just something about the guy that commands the screen. We saw that as early on as Neverwhere (Crikey was that really ten years ago?).

I'd be more than happy with that. He is a very genuinely talented actor.

For some annoying reason I can't remember what Paterson Joseph sounds like. I've seen him in plenty, and he is very good, but I can't remember what he sounds like. I want to say quite posh, deep English accent?

If he's really any good, he can sound like whatever the script calls for him to sound like.

But the Marquis de Carabas was rather posh in his manner of discourse.
'The marquis. Well, you know, to be honest, he seems a little bit dodgy to me.'
'Mm,' she agreed. 'He's a little bit dodgy in the same way that rats are a little bit covered in fur."

Fabian Nicezia is supposed to be doing a "Captain Action" series for moonstone- i wonder if that's going to be held up?
