Again?
That's a shame.
"With Great Power...Comes Great Responsibility."
"I've never asked for much. Like everyone else, I know the odds are always against us. That's just the way the universe works. I don't want guarantees, promises, assurances or false hopes. All I've ever asked is for one chance to stand on my own feet and give it my best shot. Succeed or fail, live or die, if I know I tried, then I can accept whatever happens."
-- Spider-Man
Wow. What a shocker.
A preemptive strike against all of those who say that it's an essential part of the lore: Bull. It hasn't been for nearly twenty-three years. Yeah, the "for all my powers" line made for a nice moment in the first Donner film, but Superman has never been Batman. He's never been defined by how many dead parents he has.
A part of me was hoping that the glaringly obvious set-up for this was some brilliant misdirection by Johns, but I guess that's not the case.
Oh, please. The foreshadowing on this has been so heavy handed we practically all have concussions. Where'd Johns learn subtlety, Oliver Stone? Spike Lee?
Spoiled ? I take it you never read that one shot (DCU # 0 ?) that came out last year. It predicted that, plus Batman's death, plus another Earth, etc etc
Not to mention the cover for Action# 870 that was solicited months ago ...
- Why can't fan-boys spell "rogue" correctly ?
Anyone who didn't already know what was going to happen in this issue clearly hadn't been paying attention.
Check out my latest review: Iron Man 3
Looking forward to reading this issue, Geoff johns superman Run has been brillaint so far.
"You can't trust them as poets either. The true poet is anonymous, as to his habits, but these boys have to look, act, and apparently smell like poets"
Flannery O'Connor on the beats.
Jonathan Kent always dies, he's the Eternal Martyr.
Cape shall not kill cape. Kometa!
DAMNED GEOFF JOHNS!!
Why can't he and Morrison leave old pa THE HELL ALONE? He's a great character, Byrne made him much more than some old man who created Superman and died and we never knew about him. He was much more of a character than Thomas Wayne. Supes already has dead parents, he does't need more dead parents. That's Batman, no Superman. More Wangst, just what we needed...
Why they didn't kill that annoying punk kid Jimmy Olsen? EVERYONE. HATES. HIM. PERIOD.
*sigh* No, I'm not--Yes. Yes, I'm Superman. Your bullets will bounce off me and I'll stare you to death with my heat Vision. May as well hand over the gun before I BEND it - John Henry Irons, the hero know as Steel
I, for one, am looking forward to the new spin-off, Ma Kent, Cougar written and drawn by Adam Hughes.
Free your soul and let it fly....
I. Am. Sold.
Waitaminit, Pa Kent is gonna die!?
I am shocked. Shocked, I say, that Pa Kent is dying.
I mean, who would have ever thought of such a thing? Pa Kent dying?
When has that ever happened before?
Oh, right, in every Superman tale!
This is the least spoilery thread in the existence of comic books.
Wait, he was still alive? I thought Loeb killed him off during that "Our World At War" kerfuffle.

Yes, the story has been told. But this Superman has never had to deal with the death of a loved one. On Earth-1 and Earth-2, Clark had to deal with it since that was part of the lore. New Earth Superman has never lost his father. He was dead when Jonathan had his first heart attack, assumed dead thanks to Conduit and he was missing for a bit following the Imperiex war. But this time, he's dead. And if you read Justice League of America #0 and Action Comics #867, you'd see where they're going with this. The New Earth Clark has always had his father by his side to dispense wisdom and compassion in times of need. He's always relied on it to get the job done. So what happens now that he's dead? How does he manage? It also shows that Clark now knows what it is like to lose a loved one. In JLA #0, Clark asked Bruce how he dealt with his parents death. He also said that it was easier growing up without really knowing his Kryptonian parents. Kara brought this up recently during the "Brainiac" arc, when she said that she wished that she was like Clark who doesn't know what it is like to feel the way she does.
Yeah, it's sad that Jonathan's dead. But we all knew this was coming. JLA #0, Action Comics #845, 847, 855-857 and Superman Annual #13 all hinted that this was coming before the "Brainiac" arc began.
No, Jonathan turned up a couple of months later alive and well. Though there were hints that they might've been going for Jonathan having alzhemiers (sp), but then that was dropped.Originally Posted by Expletive Deleated
