John Barber could stand to brush up on his history:

DW: If anything, Professor X knows more about Logan than Logan does. And yes, the Weapon X series of experiments conducted on Wolverine took place sometime between the mid-to late-fifties and the late sixties, “Marvel time.”

JB: But the experiments where he got the Adamantium happened after the Korean War.
"Between the mid-to-late fifties and the late sixties" would qualify as "after the Korean War," John. Did you perhaps mean Vietnam?

In “Wolverine: Origins” #28, we see Wolverine meeting Professor X for the first time…except they had already met before in the Korean War, right?
I'm sorry, can anyone tell me if there's an issue with a backstory for this? It seems I've missed this somehow.

Yeah, he must've meant after Vietnam because, as shown in the second Wolverine: Origins arc with Nuke, Logan did not have the adamantium in 'Nam.

Wow.. I just love how Mike Carey breaks down the way he portrays the X-men; I don't know about the rest of you but it seems to me he has a hell of a grasp on some of the these X-folks. I think that's what makes for good storytellin', when you know who you're writing about. I think I'll start collecting Legacy (in graphic novel form) when I get the chance.

I find him to be pretty hit-or-miss. For example, I generally like his Iceman despite not being a fan of the character, but his fawning attitude towards Mystique is very grating. He nailed Cable, but his Gambit is laughably bad, almost Milligan caliber. The man writes an awesome Sinister though(when he isn't getting killed via headlock that is  ).

    Cool

I have most of "Supernovas" but I still haven't read it yet; from what I read on the net and hear, he's got a lock on certain X-characters and this interview proves it.

On a side note, greenshoes, that was Mercedes of the Hellfire Club fighting wolvie in that panel? Isn't she a new character? I thought she was a brunette?

Well, that's because nobody cares about Gambit.
Carey only brought him in due to an editorial edict and because of his ties to Rogue.

The only time I feel Carey has written someone out of character was Cannonball in Divided We Stand, and that was partially due to editorial edict as well. (Sam joining the New Brotherhood was a red herring, so we had to have a misleading story that showed him "going bad.")

The bottom line is that I am bringing Professor X back in from the cold, but I'm doing it in a way that doesn't deny any of the character beats already defined for him
God bless Mike Carey. The X-line can be happy to have him as a writer!

    I like Mike Carey.

I just wish his writing was a bit perkier.

On one hand, I really believe he respects the line and the characters but on the other I think he takes the X-History and his approach to the adult heroes characterization much too seriously. When Ramos or Bachelo aren't there to lighten up the mood, the somber tone goes dull very quickly.

I hope Daken joins up Rogue and the crew after this phase of adjectiveless X-Men wraps.

Yeah, I don;t get much "miss" from Carey. I think his weakest characters so far have probably been Gambit, Husk and Nightcrawler, but when compared to the characters he's done exceedingly well (Xavier, Rogue, Emma, Cyclops, Beast, Mystique, Iceman, Cannonball, Mastermind, Magneto, Cable, Sabretooth, Shaw, Karima, etc) it's no contest. And even his weaker characters aren't necessarily "off", it's usually narrative leads and demands that weaken the portrayals imo.

He brought Gambit in because the mess Milligan made of the character was dumped into his lap when he followed him up on the book. How he managed to take a character that was at an all time low and go even lower is anyone's guess.

    I wouldn't say that.

His Sunfire was a cardboard cutout villain with no personality or motivation. This isn't even consistent with what milligan did to the character; Sunfire was at least half-rational. When a character looked better in the Blood of apocalypse arc than they do in yours, you've got problems. He may as well have been twirling a mustache and tying girls to train tracks.

His Gambit is just all kinds of bad. The dialogue is stilted, accent is way overdone, the French incomprehensible, and he can't even keep the character's power consistent. One minute he's being scranned by every telepath that comes along, the next he's charging flesh but couldn't charge an inanimate cage.

His Mystique was particularly grating. He keeps pushing this sympathetic angle that just doesn't wash and dumbs down everyone around her so she can get away with the stuff she does. No, fighting off a badguy doesn't make up for disemboweling your daughter. At least his rogue is fallable to some extent.

Then we have inexplicable things like Emma telepathically blocking sinister from a world away, Mystique out-muscling Sinister, Emma slapping Charles around telepathically, Iceman being seduced by mystique, etc. Basically, he's good at snappy dialogue and interesting plots, but his characterization isn't all people make it out to be; he writes the characters to fit his story rather than writing his story to fit the characters.

    I was just guessing tho

Maybe Deodato decided to change the color

P.S. Wolverine was also fighting a wolf man
