Lightbulb Your ONE (and ONLY ONE) favorite comic artist!

Here was Gail's challenge as issued on another board:

    http://dcboards.warnerbros.com/web/t...65359&tstart=0

I ask this question for fun sometimes of my pro friends, and it's fun to see that it's just impossible for the average comics reader to answer by the rules of the question. It's just too restrictive.

The question is, who is your ONE SINGLE NO-QUALIFIER, NO-WAFFLING favorite artist in comics, living or deceased?

I have a million that I adore, some I worship and a legion I like a lot. But you can ONLY mention one single name. Your very favorite.

    For me, that's Joe Kubert.

He could draw anything and make it look amazing, and he draws like he invented mood. He's a helluva writer, one of the best mentors the industry has ever had, but it's his ART that kills me. The guy just sends chills up my spine with his work.

So that's mine. What about yours?

I didn't realize how tough that question was until I had to think about it. I have five artists whose art I absolutely ADORE, but if I had to pick one? Gosh, this is hard!
Um, I think...geez! I mean, how do you pick just ONE?

Okay. Travis Charest. But I cut myself a little bit because I was forced to choose one.

Um, I think...geez! I mean, how do you pick ONE from a list that includes Brian Bolland, Travis Charest, Phil Jimenez, Olivier Coipel and Adam Hughes?

Okay. Travis Charest. But I cut myself a little bit because I was forced to choose one.

You broke the rule, Bobby. :)

You can't even MENTION another artist!

Adam Hughes. And no, notjustfor the Cheesecake art. I just love everything about his pictures, especially how good he is at setting the entire tone of a picture by a characters facial expression. There aren't alot of artists who can draw a character looking sexy and bad ass, but looking nervous and uncertain, and pull the whole thing off without it seeming forced or half-assed.

    Joe Quesada.

I'll buy any comic he draws, and love his continual growth/development/progress as an artist. He's seriously under-rated.

    Only one?

Aw hell, I'd go with John Romita Jr. He's too much awesome, especially on Spider-Man.

I lose the challenge. I can't decide between Josh Middleton and Becky Cloonan. Somedays I lean to one, somedays another.

    I lose.

I'm hopeless here, because even with the best artist I know there have been times they've had off-product I couldn't get into, and there have also been times when folks who I'd otherwise thought average really rose to an occasion and produced something unexpectedly glorious.

There are definitely artists who've I've thought consistently SUCKED, but that's another (less pleasant) topic.

    Gail,

Okay, so I cheated a tad. I edited my post.

But I still have your quote to remind me! LOL!
