    Default What is Trauma's origin?

Solicits for November '08 include an Avengers: The Initiative Special #1 that has two features in it, one being Hardball's dealings with HYDRA coming to light, and the other, that I'm wondering about, being the reveal of the origin of Initiative member Trauma.

So, does anyone have any theories as to where he gets his power to psionically detect a person's fears, and physically change, via metamorphic ability, into them?

Is it a science experiment? Genetic tinkering? Cosmically-related? Magically empowered?

And, does it somehow relate to another fear-based phenomenon, or character in the Marvel Universe?

    Speculate to your heart's content...

I kicked around a few ideas with people, including exposure to either chemicals from Mr. Fear, some relation to Marvel's Scarecrow, or perhaps a magical relation to either D'Spayre or Nightmare.

Of all the possibilities, I like the idea of him somehow being empowered via magical interference from Nightmare, to be an agent of his upon the Earth, from his own realm.

I'm very taken with the idea of the Nightmare connection. If he's actually related that could explain how Trauma seemingly came back from death.

Trauma also looks a lot like how Nightmare was depicted in the cancelled Nightcrawler series.

I think I first saw Nightmare as Trauma's dad suggested somewhere a while back by the poster Monty Cristo. Seems like a natural choice, and the best guess.

Makes you wonder what Nightmare's taste in women would be, though.

A Sorceress who made a pact to father him a child?

There seems to be more potential with the Nightmare front than the rest. That, and there's a terrible shortage of mystically powered characters in the Marvel U., compared to others. Other than Nico in Runaways, and Wiccan on Young Avengers, I don't think there have been too many created since 2000.

Nightmare has been making the rounds recently (in name only at least) in the Last Defenders series...and I swear i saw him mentioned somewhere else recently, but can't remember (damn Mephisto!)

He was featured in the Incredible Hercules.

I actually like the idea of Trauma being Nightmare's child, because that makes his desicion to help people overcome their fears a real twist of the knife to dear ole dad.

There was a quick mention of his mother is the first several issues of the Initiative, she was in a mental hospital. Kind of lends itself to the Nightmare theory, I'd think a fling with the god/spirit/embodiment of terror/fear/nightmares in dreams would mess a lady up.

Yeah, but so would giving birth to/raising Trauma.

She's a mutant who learned to teleport via spells and wield a Soul Dagger. But her main, original power is that of a mutant. That's why I didn't mention her.

Considering she winded up in a mental hospital (courtesy of her baby boy?), I'm guessing she's a lil more ordinary than that.

Probably some poor schmo that Nightmare ended up stealth impregnating somehow.

You know how guys like Nightmare are, they're creepy as hell and they always wait to do the weirdest **** imaginable until everybody else is asleep.

    Default Trauma

Personally, I think he has something to do with Nightmare, especially when I compare and contrast pictures of both Trauma and Nightmare. The resemblance is uncanny. However, seeing as how ATI has almost never been obvious with its revelations, I can't say that with one hundred percent certainty.

Also looking forward to the fallout from what Hardball did from this issue.
