All i can say is dont judge Hellboy comics by the movies. Its hollywood, no matter how good the movies are it wont capture horror feel of the comics among many things.
If you are expecting Hellboy comics to be action stories that are mostly good vs evil or supernatural evil....
I also found Hellboy thanks to the first movie.
The first trade wowed me because i wasnt expecting the writing, great art of Mignola.
Well I felt like using that particular word of yours.
Hope I did allright and not quote you brokenly?
And Pariah, take Hellboy however you like. He is cool and beats beasties. 'Though the more you read it, the more sense the story'll make. In that sense I like the HB world so much, (more than if it were simplified for more average comprehension) Again, same goes for Animated HB.

Chillingly good stuff besides Mignola, Slint, M, Knut and really big chunks of tinfoil?Been called a 'good egg'. Been told to rock, been told to steady myself. Been told to (please) be goin' places.
Half sunk in the mud, with one eye showing / a cracked smile and hair still growing /
your hands miles apart, as if they'd never met / you were the happiest I'd seen you yet. ~ (full) lyrics to 'Exhume' by Bedhead.
Bellygrub-
Comic Art Galley
Yeah. I figured it out reading your explanatory fanboy confessing conversation with mr. Hill.
The day I 'signed on' here (using my given name) everybody seemed to instantly change their names, like The_Cure and others. I felt rather quirky to be frank. But yeah, I'd like to bellygrub in front of MM one day

OK.
How is Hellboy shooting and killing a frog monster that just killed his adoptive father, or Liz burning Cavendish Manor down to the ground, or the ghost of Elihu Cavendish posessing Abe and hurling a spear through Rasputin's Heart not action oriented? Virtually all the Hellboy comics are very atmosphere heavy. That's kinda how Mignola rolls. I don't know what to say about your take on the characterization, I don't get that.
I remember loaning out a HB trade after my mate watched the first film. He loved the movie but hated the comic. I couldn't understand why! I kept trying to reassure him that if he reads more, he'll get so much more out of the characters and things would start to click in place. He still won't budge. Ahh well... his loss.
Oh, and for the record, I loved Blood and Iron. As I've just posted in another thread, the highlight for me is when Hellboy beats the crap out of Hecate with a bathtub.

I would generally advise against using Seed of Destruction as an entry point to the comics. It's by far the weakest chapter in Hellboy. I'd dive in with Chained Coffin or Right Hand of Doom. There are some very poignant character moments in those stories. Up until the last few years all of the Hellboy stories have jumped around chronologically anyway so it's not absolutely necessary to read them in order.
My very first Hellboy story was The Corpse, online. The first Hellboy story I read in print was Pancakes. If those two together don't seal the Hellboy comic deal for a person, then there may be no hope for them!
lol some of the posts in this thread took me right back to when i joined -hehe
The first live action film was very loosely based on Seed of Destruction, not the other way around.
It's weakest because when it was created, Mike Mignola was unsure of himself as a storyteller and so gave his story to John Byrne to write. Consequently it is not purely Mike Mignola's voice, which is the heart and soul of Hellboy. It's not the best place to acquaint one's self with Hellboy if only because it doesn't deliver the full flavour and character of Hellboy in Mignola's voice and art together. It's still a good story to come back to, especially for appreciating continuity that arises in later story arcs (particularly BPRD), but it's not the one that is going to give the best first impression. If I had read Seed first and had read no other Hellboy stories, I might not have bothered to read further. I found some of the the mechanics of Byrne's story-telling on Seed to be rather awkward and over-wrought, particularly in the application of the inner monologue.
Be warned, though, Seed of Destruction and the short story The Corpse are the only canon Hellboy stories that the live-action films have any (loose) relationship to. As you read the comics you will find a whole host of confusing differences, particularly since the second live-action film has completely diverged from the comic universe. The film universe is entirely its own thing now, headed in a totally different direction from where Mike Mignola is sending Hellboy. Expect no correspondence.
The comics don't capture his sarcastic sense of humor tho does it?
