If the amount of male-on-female violence exceeds the amount of female-on-male violence, and if we see good guys striking their female friends or acquaintances without provocation (as somebody said Sunspot did), then I'll worry.
Right now it doesn't look like it's that bad. The guy threatening Sage is a villain, Mariko had begged Wolverine to put her out of her misery since she was dying slowly and nobody could do anything about it, and I really doubt Kurt would attack any woman who hadn't attacked him or somebody under his protection first.
Something you have to remember about CC: all of his characters are put through hell. Remember what the Reavers did to Wolverine when they captured him? That's much worse than anything shown here.
Just saw the scan of the Roberto slap. Only way that's justified is if she's really hysterical and he's the first in a line of people trying to calm her down, like in Airplane!
(I joke--seriously, slapping people is wrong, kids.)
CC writes his female characters battered more often. It allows them to crawl back from the abyss.
Sage is a special case, though.
Sage is beaten even by her friends.
Both Emma and Nightcrawler have assaulted her. If you add Sage to the list with Karma and Dani, you'll see that Nightcrawler has a problem (I don't have a scan of Kurt attacking her).

Oh, didn't recognize those two.
Was that a Danger Room sequence or something? He couldn't have knocked their heads together very hard if they were just sparring or something.
He hadn't met them yet. When they came back from space, the X-Men were intent on aborting Professor Xavier's brood baby. They decided to treat the New Mutants like enemies so that they wouldn't interfere with the abortion, and attacked them as they peacefully watched Magnum P.I. (on DVD because of the sliding time-line).
