Default WW Chicago: Wonder Woman Spotlight

Gail Simone, Aaron Lopresti and Greg Rucka took to the WizardWorld stage Saturday to discuss the challenges and rewards of telling stories about DC's Amazonian princess.

I must admit, that even though I'm not that big of a Wonder Woman fan, I must say that Rucka had a point with not fully going through the aftermath of Wonder Woman's role in Sacrifice.

He joked that the artwork isn't just pages of crotch shots anymore.
As if that's a bad thing!

It bugs me that the writers following Rucka were told not to touch anything he had tried to set up.

I thought comics were a collaborative art.

But with DC editorial being so screwed up right now... Oh well. It's funny that Ms. Simone's favorite writers on Wonder Woman are mine as well.

I especially liked Mr. Jiminez's run as I loved his big Circe story.

If Rucka and Simone teamed up, they could write one majorily kick ass Wonder Woman movie script.

Creators that have a hard time writing her have a tendency to write her as a female Superman, Rucka said, but to write an effective Wonder Woman story you have to embrace the fact that Diana is inherently political.
Maybe that's why I can never get into the character.

I only caught the tail end of Ruckas WW run but I didnt care for it all that much. I'm not sure I like the current WW either. I liked the albino gorillas and Captain Nazi but that's been about it.

I dunno, I want to like WW. I buy multiple Bat and Super books but I can't get excited about one WW solo book. Maybe I just don't get her. Because being more like Superman sounds like a good idea to me.

Default Too bad about the Max Lord storyline

Fans want to see some real resolution to it. It's so wrong of editorial to let it float like that. It 'll be addressed eventually but I doubt they'll get as many sales out of it. Oh well. I'm just a lowly fanboy...

Rucka is the definitive WW writer in my book. Simone is excellent also and I expect more greatness from her.

Lopresti has one of the best looks for WW I've ever seen and I competely agree with his physical interpretation and attitude towards her.

What really good rogue's does she have ? I'm not the biggest fan, but I can think of Ares (the best), Circe, Cheetah, Angle Man, and Dr Psycho. In the mid 70's Mego had an enemy of her's called Nubia. Blaxploitation ? Kinda I guess, but I'd like to see them do something kind of like that. I miss Artemis. I'd love to see what Gail could do with her.

There's Devestation, Decay, Medusa, Giganta, Doctor Poison, Queen Clea, Doctor Cyber, and their cohorts (whose names escape me at the moment), the White Magician, Silver Swan, Red Panzer, Dark Angel, Veronica Cale, and Egg Fu.

Forcing Rucka off the book for the conceptual and publishing trainwreck of the Heinberg/Picoult era was a disaster that the character's mythos is still grievously wounded by. Thinking of what might have been still makes me sad.

Simone's great. Loving the Lopresti art.

But the rogue's gallery thing? Absolutely true. Almost anyone in the general population can name at least one of "bad guys" that counts as an enemy of Batman or Superman...but the WW hit list is -- um....

I think it'd help if Wonder Woman had a high profile movie or solo cartoon or another live action show.

She's too underexposed compared to Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.

Honestly, some of her villains are great. I love Ares, Circe, Cheetah, Psycho, Veronica Cale, Angle Man, White Magician, and Giganta.

It's partly that she's mostly known by the general public for her Lynda Carter live action show which had mostly nameless and/or cheesy villains due to budget restraints.

She got some exposure on Justice League, but it's not the same as a solo project. If WB/DC really made a quality production on par with what they do with Superman, Batman, and Justice League, I think it may do very well and perhaps generate interest.

Yeah but remember, Gail just said she hasn't been told not to touch it. Rucka said they told Heinberg and Piccoult not to deal with it and really, if you're only there for 5 issues, and one of you is restarting the book, and the other one's gonig to be in the middle of a company wide crossover, I'd stay away from that stuff too while I'm trying to get my story done.

However, why didn't Rucka mention Manhunter at least continued the story by doing the arc where they did put WW on trial and at least gave that aspect a resolution?

What if its not specifically one in Wonder Woman it doesn't count?

But they know Gail's hanging around, she's got more time to pull plots from previous stories. You should wait and save that for someone who's not there for the sake of a story arc.

    I loved Greg's run.

We actually DID address the killing of Max Lord very, very obliquely at the end of the Circle arc. But listening to Greg, I think he made a good case that there should be more of a resolution.

So that's in the stewpot for further consideration. ;)

I'm glad you're thinking about it because in my humble opinion it doesn't really make sense that Wonder Woman would necessarily have a code against killing. She's comes from a pagan warrior culture and there's no real precedent for not killing your enemies in battle or even executing the after victory. I'd love to see a Year One (hint, hint) where a young Diana is fully prepared to lop the head off the first wife beater she meets only to have our justice system explained to her, as it would also make sense she'd take to the ideas of forgiveness and redemption. Not to mention Superman would influence her as well.

And as long as you're dealing with Rucka and the past, he essentially had Diana say she'd kill Dr. Light if she caught him, so let's somehow amend that horrible scene in JLA where she stops The Cheetah from killing him with the most generic, cliched speech about not killing. This was Dr. Light for goodness sake! Even in the context of Maxwell Lord there should have been a moment when everyone in room, hero and villain, thought she'd kill him.
