Default WW Chicago: Bendis Talks "Spider-Woman"

"Secret Invasion" may have revealed Spider-Woman to be a Skrull, but despite that setback, next year the long awaited "Spider-Woman" ongoing series finally hits stores. CBR News spoke with writer Brian Michael Bendis about the book.

We still don't know who is within the Spider-woman mask outside her costume ?

But it appears to be the real return of the real Jessica Drew.

Not too crazy about the creative team, but I love the character of Spider-Woman, so I'll be giving this a shot. I was really happy to hear she's getting her own book again.

    yay!

Maleev is most awesome but I love what the Luna Brothers did in SpiderWoman Origin.

I hope this is as good as Origin.

    And it better be Jessica!

This book has been announced and talked about so many times it's hard for me to get excited about it. But I'm sure I'll pick it up when it comes out, especially considering that Bendis is collaborating with Alex on a monthly basis again.

But I like that they claim they are doing something different. A mix of Superhero and spy kinda like James Bond, sounds cool to me. Seems like they are not letting the Alias roots of the character be forgotten. I will be getting this.

I like that too and I can't wait to see it but like I dunno, I've heard what he's been wanting to do for a while so I'm not as excited as I should be.

Unless this book is constantly saddled with gimmicks, this book will be canceled by issue 12.

So I am guessing that Jessica isn't going to register with the government?

Spider-Woman fans shouldn't automatically assume this series stars Jessica Drew. All Bendis could confirm about the title character was that she would be clad in Spider-Woman's classic red and yellow costume. "That costume is one of the best in comics," Bendis told CBR News. "It's one of the things people like about her."
    Really?

    I mean..really? I hate that damn costume.

I think it's the only costume in comics I actually would sew together just so I could set it on fire. It's just always looked so incredibly tacky to me.

That said, I'm still interested in giving this a shot, the "SWORD" tagline made it sound like Spider-Woman was going to become some strange sort of cosmic character (possibly something skrull related) but from the way Bendis described some of the locations, I'm hoping it's an earthbound series.

Unless this book is constantly saddled with gimmicks, this book will be canceled by issue 12.
I don't know, with Bendis backing it up with some big artists, it could probably give it legs for quite abit.
I'm beginning to think that Hell is a comic book forum.

But, Bendis has been time pull right now, and because of that initially the series will be very very hot. You can not discount his name being on the book right now. He also has a tendency to stick with titles (USM, NA),which usually draws fans in. Finally, he just demonstarted what can be done with SI when you give one person such control over one line. The 1st arcs will be un der the microscope for easter eggs of another plot 3 or 4 years in the making. This title will have more milage than 12 issues, I can not imagine it being at least on the same level as Ms Marvel or She Hulk, as far as sales go. Will it never die out, well nothing last forever, but it should be steady for at least a few years.

Plus, I believe Marvel wants/needs a big name female character that can stand on her own. The X-Females have never been able to do this, and there has been limited success with others.

I've never been a big fan of Jessica Drew, I'm more of an Arachne kind of guy myself but Bendis has done a decent job resuscitating her.

Coming off Secret Invasion, like Bamf said, this'll probably do very well for awhile in the early going.

It's abit of a wildcard but whereas She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel have kind of struggled on the sales charts, I think this is the first female driven Superhero title that Marvel has had in awhile that might really stand a chance of holding up.

Tacky you say??? Some of the best costumes in comics were made in the 70's.... Spider-Woman, Ms. Marvel's black costume. Phoenix, and Storm. All great costumes, better then the ones some are running around in today.

As for the Spider-Woman title, I'm not holding my breath until I see it. I'm not going to get swept up again to get crushed.
