Default WW Chicago: Tan, Banning, and Bendis on "New Avengers"

Billy Tan is one of a number of artists penciling the "Secret Invasion" tie-ins of "New Avengers," but once the cross-over wraps, Tan and inker Matt Banning become the title's regular art team. CBR spoke with both of them, as well as writer Brian Michael Bendis, about the series.

Looks like the team may still be underground once SI is over and even though they solved their first BIG case as Avengers.

Well at least it shows that ONE of the Avengers teams may still exist Post-SI with a good creative team.

I'm glad that Billy Tan is getting to work with one of my favorite inkers in the business today. It will help to ensure that his stuff looks the best it can

Sounds good, but can he do monthly? I seem to remember him needing fill-ins during his stint on Uncanny. Perhaps Dave Finch could come back after Ultimatum and he and Tan could rotate on New Avengers. That would be perfect IMO.

The way the story was structured had him do 2 issues at a time, followed by 1 issue by Clay Henry with a different focus, then another 2, etc., until the final 3, which he did all of. I don't know if that was required, or just how they decided to structure the story (certainly, he couldn't do twelve issues straight on a monthly basis).

I was ambivalent about Tan's UXM work, but the recent Shanna issue of NA was a big improvement.

    Finch + Avengers = greatness.

I believe Tan can handle New Avengers. If Bendis continues to use rotating artists to keep up a monthly, Tan could spend the time to maintain the high level of quality Avengers readers are beginning to expect.

I'm really iffy on Billy Tan, sometimes he pumps out something really close to awesome and other times his art falls flat because of his weird use of anatomy and very iffy shading inside the characters. I'm hoping that the issues look as good as his New Avengers Secret Invasion tie in and maybe even something better than that since Matt Banning is inking him.

I guess I'll have to wait it out to see more of his work on NA but I'm not a huge fan of his style.

According to Bendis Tan was hired based on his work in NA 41. As long as Shanna isn't a new recruit, I'll be happy with him!

would have preferred Yu to carry on, or even Aja to take over.

Same here, although a team book for Aja monthly could be really taxing on him given that he wasn't able to handle the monthly grind as well as other artists. He needed a bunch of fill ins, specials, and stuff like that to keep the book's release consistent.

I'm drawing a blank right now, who is aja?

With the way tan drew that fill in issue I have high hopes for the art in his arc of new avengers. That was a beautifal issue. Ill wait to see how his arc turns out before I judge who I would want on a monthly basis. Bendis seems to put a lot of emphasis on getting the books out on time. With that being the case I highly doubt well see a lot of david finch. New avengers was constantly late during his run. Yu seems to work nicely so when he's done I'd be open to have him come back and do new avengers.

He was drawing Iron Fist until recently. Great artist.

Thanks a lot. Guess I was drawing a blank since I hadn't seen his art. I haven't read that series but maybe ill check out the first trade and see his art if he did that arc.
