There's also a few online comic shops like mile high comics and lonestar comics. Those 2 stores have a large supply of old back issues. I've bought from lonestar about 3 or 4 times and I have had good service with them.

trust me, i dont think i could even read the moderns without learning their roots.

exactly. i tried jumping into uncanny x-men (or just "x-men" back then) with a recent issue, but i hated knowing that i was missing storylines, etc. from before, even though there are retcons later on.

essential spider-man's are really cool too if you like spidey at all.

the first 130 issues or so (and probably more, i haven't bought volumes 7 and 8 yet) of spidey really feel like an easy to follow addictive chronicle of the adolescence, high school, and college years of Peter parker. it's handled pretty maturely too in my opinion.

it's hella cool that you're so down for the 60's marvel. people say that stan lee wasn't a great scripter compared to modern scripts but I find his stuff to be really fun and like i said before, pretty damn mature in a way that I don't think a lot of people give him credit for. save for a few expository moments here and there, i feel like his characters for the most part do act like real people and talk like them as well.

(not that I'm trying to convince you anymore, i just feel like waxing about old spidey....) Peter will get into ridiculously complex social situations that he just can't get out of. It's almost seinfeld-ish at times (written by funny jews? whoda thunk it...) sometimes details will be as real, complex and minute as not wanting to come across a certain way when he talks to people, expressions on people's faces, social faux pas etc. The only spidey as good since is some defalco, dematteis, and JMS in my opinion. but i haven't read ultimate stuff yet though

I think the problem (for some) with 60s Marvel is that it hasn't aged too well.
I cringe when I read all the puns and some crappy dialogue here and there, but, well, it was a different time and target audience.
That's what I keep in mind when going through old issues/stories.

see and while i totally respect your opinion i totally disagree.

i feel like the most intelligent college kids (i guess, of which i like to consider amongst the ranks of) are a big target demographic for early amazing spider-man. the stories aren't dumbed down, the conflicts are real, relatable, and often complex, the characters act understandably etc. I've also read that college kids in the 60s loved Marvel comics, especially as compared to other comics. this makes a lot of sense to me.
