As for the past, in this thread I've listed all the trades that have ever been published and may still be available. Many libraries have trades now. Or you can start at the very beginning with the black & white Essentials volumes or the aforementioned 40 Years DVD-ROM.
Where would Buziek's Avengers Assemble fit in? The latest volume (5 I think) is coming out soon.

You don't have to read illuminati to follow the New Avengers.

The New Avengers: Illuminati Special has more to do with Civil War, and The New Avengers: Illuminati, which is out now are stories about large (sometimes) crossover marvel events that have happened in the past. They give brief rundowns of the events their discussing throughout the issue, but if you know little to nothing about them it may not be worth your time.

Neither of which are mandatory Avengers stories if your just trying to get into it, but I enjoy(ed) both.

Like mattbib said, you can start at Mighty Avengers #1 (which started last month) and New Avengers #26, which is the beginning of the NEW New Avengers (#26-28) are out now...so, really thats only 4 comic books and really sweet beginning.

Also recommended, but not necessary would be Avengers Disassembled TPB, New Avengers Vol 1: Breakout TPB, New Avengers Vol 2: Sentry TPB, New Avengers Vol 3: Secrets and Lies TPB, New Avengers Vol 4: The Collective (all of which are out) and New Avengers Vol 5: New Avengers Disassembled (which I think is only out in hardcover). And of course when the Civil War TPB comes out, it dealt a lot with the recent New Avengers/Mighty Avengers outcomes.

I personally couldnt get into the Avengers till Avengers v3 Issue 61 where the art and story caught my interest. I cannot read old school avengers because I cant stand the art and having every little detailed explained in captions. The Avengers no longer reported to the US, but to the United Nations starting in 61. From there it gold, except for Issue 71. WTF was marvel thinking?

Avengers Disassembled -> Secret War -> New Avengers Vol. 1-5

You're go to go there. New Avengers Vol. 5 takes place side by side with Civil War. And the Mighty Avengers series starts as a result of Civil War...

    Where do you start ?
Easy ..... current new avengers title is not worth the paper it is printed on. Save your money and treat yourself to ice cream , better value. ;)

I thought it weird that no haters were coming out to voice their own, albeit angry opinions yet...good too see their coming out of the woodwork again.

Default Where to start with Avengers?

Ok so im a huge fan of the avengers, Thor in particular. But Ive never been into comics till 4 months ago. I want to read the stories from the begining, but getting a first issue is insane. Any practical Ideas out there?

Marvel Essentials are an inexpensive way to catch up from the beginning. They are around 500 pages but the drawback (to some ) is they are printed in black and white.

I'm cheap and have no local comic shop so I've got most of mine via eBay. They are however widely available on Amazon.com or any other book or comic retailer online. This site has more info on the available essentials and the issues reprinted. It also has info on the Marvel Masterworks which are hard cover COLOR volumes which reprint early stories but are not as large and more expensive.

Hope this helps and welcome to the wonderful world of comics

Marvel Essentials, as someone has already said, is a good choice. Otherwise, I'd just start with the current series.
