I'd recommend you buy the Avengers DVD rom- It has over 500 issues on it I believe and goes through issue 19 of the New Avengers series. These run for about 40 to 50 bucks but its a great deal. I'd recommend these to anyone that is trying to get into comics, or back into them.

read the 'Dissasembled' trade first, and then the 'Secret War' trade.
those both lead to New Avengers. Buy the first New Avengers trade.
of course, you can completely skip the first two, I did and still love the series.
other trades of NA you might wanna look into are: Civil War: Disassembled (whenever that comes out), the one that deals with Sentry (guest stars galore!) and...the Ronin/Spider-Woman arcs.
'course, thats all the story's we've gotten pre-civil war.

The easiest starting point might just be Mighty Avengers 1, which just came out. That's the start of a brand new Avengers team.

As for the New Avengers.... a good starting point there might be the Disassmebled Story Avengers story arc trade paperback, followed by the Breakout tradepaper back.

Course, the new Avengers recently rebooted becaues of the Civil War event at New Avengers 27. That's also a descent starting point since only 2 issues have occurered since them.

Also, pick up Avengers: Red Zone and Hearts of Avalon. Those trades arent too heavy in continuity and features great art by Olivier Coipel.

Also, try out Ultimates. It''s like the Avengers, but for the new millenium,

Justice Society of America is a well-written team book published by DC that recently started up again after a hiatus during a major crossover.

While Bendis has a good reputation as a writer, his work on New Avengers indicates that he is not comfortable writing teams, either in terms of mass combats or even scenes where a group of characters are talking amongst themselves. Just recently, there were several consecutive issues of New Avengers that weren't team issues at all, just solo adventures featuring individuals from the team roster.

Just start with Mighty Avengers #1 and New Avengers #26 and Avengers: The Initiative #1 and continue from there. You'll figure out what's going on in the present soon enough.

As for the past, in this thread I've listed all the trades that have ever been published and may still be available. Many libraries have trades now. Or you can start at the very beginning with the black & white Essentials volumes or the aforementioned 40 Years DVD-ROM.

I don't know... I think the fact that he doubled the number of Avenger team books he's writing is a pretty descent indicator he's not terribly uncomfortable writing them. Course, that's just my interpretation.

For Mighty Avengers you just to need #1, before the next issue.

For New Avengers you should probably read Disassembled TPB, Secret War trade... and then Start from NA #1 I guess? I think you could also start from 26 without getting confused.

New Avengers #1. You can buy the Trade Paperbacks or Hardcovers to get caught up if you can't track down the individual issues.

As for the Avengers prior that, they were totally different. If you're here for the New Avengers there's probably no reason to catch up on the Old Avengers. Personally I always thought the Old Avengers were lame.
