To be fair, I'm pretty sure you aren't allowed to include references to homosexuality on childrens TV in the states (remember, Static was a saturday morning kid's show). Though I do think there was a statement Mcduffie made in an interview where he said something to the effect of "as far as I'm concerned, Ritchie is gay".

And I think thats pretty ridiculous, that they can't have homosexuality on kids TV. If their willing to acknowledge relationships exist, they should be willing to acknowledge they exist between people of the same gender too

One of the criticisms I heard with the show refusing to acknowledge Ritchie/Rick's homosexuality was that it had already done a lot of episodes about stuff like gun violence and racism. The thing though is, those issues aren't nearly as polarizing. I doubt you'll find many people who are going to say "I HATE that this show is telling kids that you shouldn't judge people by the color of their skin!" or that "How dare they tell my son that bringing a gun to school can end in disaster!!" It's not the same way for gay rights. Just look at all the homophobes that come into the forefront every time the issue is debated.

I guess I just wish there were more people brave enough to ignore those idiots. Too many people are too scared of offending all the self righteous homophobes out there. The fact the show ignored the characters homosexuality just out of fear of pissing off some bigoted morons is just sad

    Default that picture of colossus

    Ug.
Wish I could write Colossus myself.
Guess that's why I create and write my own characters.

Incidentally, Colossus was the only guy who actually looked fairly hot in the book.

...On the other hand, it even had Thanos in shorts, and who wants to see him half naked?

    Ha, so you say!

Oh, damn, I had nearly forgotten about that. You're right. And Constantine is even one of my favorite characters.

And yeah, I don't see how "huge bulging muscles" in a Marvel swimsuit issue = obviously drawn by straight dudes. Tons of gay/bi dudes (and women, there might've been some female artists working on those swimsuit issues as well) love the buff and super-buff guys. That Colossus pic you posted is nice (although--and I know it's just the shinyness/reflection, but--it'd be nice if it didn't look like he was wearing subtle blue eyeshadow), but given all the depictions I've seen of Colussus, that's very restrained. They didn't overinflate him/'roid him up there, he looks like he could be the same build as Cyclops (but that's just because there's no male in the pic to compare him to). Not that there's anything wrong with the extreme meathead look, he and many other heroes look great being overbuff, with the right artist drawing them.
I admit, it may mostly be personal preference, liking lean more than super muscular, but I also feel there is a lack of .. how to describe, sensuality in most of the swimsuit pictures of guys. I mean, look at the Colossus one? Hot. The whole composition is very well done, the muscles are accentuated in the right way, the choice of clothing (what there is) is given good thought. Most of the other pics seem rather awkward in comparison, and quite a few of the male ones were played up for laughs, compared to the female pics, like Punisher with a skull in front of his junk, or Captain America making a strange face, etc.

Cyclops usually has a swimmers build, outside of certain artists, going along with his nickname "slim", while Colossus definitely is in the more muscular definition.

Appreciating both genders. Twice as much fun when reading comics.

He's just a bit -too- muscular for my tastes, but there is no denying he's drawn in a seriously hot way.

Yep, Thanos in swim trunks, and with shades, trying to talk up Moondragon, who looks at a Warlock. Drawn by Ron Lim.

Agreed! And the attendants around him (One of whom seems to be sporting chains and leather) are pretty appealing to the eye too

Only on a comic board would you find a discussion of whether it counts as bestiality if the animal has a human brain!

I agree completely, but Broadcast Standards and practices begged to differ. That's the thing, though, Kids WB at the time didn't even allow us to have *heterosexual* relationships between non-adults. Poor Virgil went four years before we could send him on a date, and he never had a kiss. Contrast that with the comics, where Rick, Ducky's mom, Tech-9, Fade, and several other characters were gay, and where Virgil had three or four regular romantic relationships, you'lll have a clearer sense of Milestone's positions on these topics.

The way I dealt with Richie's homosexuality was to write him aggressively and unconvincingly announcing his heterosxuality whenever possible ("Wow! Look at those girls in the swimsuits! I sure like girls!"), while Virgil rolled his eyes at the transparency of it.

And I love you guys at Milestone for it. You understood that "Diversity" didn't begin and end at having one character be the "Token black man" in a comic. You showcased all kinds of diversity

And it sounds like all the negative stereotypes about Broadcast Standards and Practices are 100% true. Talk about uptight and repressed.

    Tech-9 was gay?
And I never really noticed that Ritchie was written like that. I'll have to look at the show again.

There was one little DVD that came out in, I think, 2006 or 2007, something like that, but it only contained the first four episodes. The studio should've known by then that boxed sets/full seasons were the way to go, but I guess they were just testing the waters to see how a cheaper Static Shock DVD would sell (it's easier to sell a $9.99 DVD to kids at Toys R Us than it is to get their parents to lay down the $20 to $30 for full season). I didn't get that one, wasn't into the DC Animated Universe at the time. Now I'm really wanting it, it's the only piece of the franchise I'm missing aside from the second season of The Zeta Project. That and Static are all that need released, Batman, Superman, Batman Beyond, and Justice League/Unlimited are all out (plus all the animated theatrical/direct-to-video/DVD movies).

Would love to have full series, uncensored cartoons/cartoons-with-creative-freedom. Preferrably North American-created (or at least written here and animated overseas), for a change (I know there's tons of anime available). Would love to see something on HBO (I think they were the last ones to do something, with the hard-R-rated Spawn 3-season series--I don't really count their recent Life of Tim, adult-ish animated comedy is a dime a dozen lately), Showtime, FX, or any other less-restrained/no-restrictions premium cable option.
