I love those comics dearly (along with Rod Serling's Twilight Zone, of course, though naturally both have to take a back seat to Ripley's Believe It or Not &, to a certain degree, UFO Flying Saucers), but I have to say I think they're pricing these above what a lot of potential buyers will pay. Color TPB format like the Total War: MARS Patrol volume would be one thing ... though I guess that included only, what, Wood's 4(?) issues. Ah, well, we'll see.
I tend to split superhero comics fans into "People who like Krypto" and "People who don't like Krypto."

While I'd certainly prefer a lower price-point, you can usually get these Dark Horse Archives in the $25-35 range either through Amazon or on the secondary market.

    "

A collection of complete comic book stories from the legendary team of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, covering every genre in which they made their mark.

From the very beginning in the late 1930s, Simon and Kirby produced the finest stories around, creating dramatic new super heroes (Captain America, Blue Bolt, Fighting American, The Fly), western action (Boy’s Ranch), gruesome horror (Black Magic), explosive detective fiction (Justice Traps the Guilty), and the very first romance comics (Young Romance). They were the dream team.

This is the only edition authorised by both Joe Simon and the estate of Jack Kirby; each story is hand-picked by Joe Simon himself."

320 pages, HC, $40. I probably shouldn't order it for fiscal reasons... but I probably will.
All-Star Western, Casanova, Criminal, Daredevil, Dark Horse Presents, Funnies, Hellboy/BPRD, King City, Orc Stain, Snarked, Unwritten, Usagi Yojimbo

Huh. Not a good sign when JONATHAN LETHEM's name is misspelled on the cover of the book. Yikes!

Collected Jack Kirby Collector Volume 7 (Paperback)

This seventh trade paperback completes the compilations of the first thirty regular-size issues of The Jack Kirby Collector, the critically acclaimed magazine about Kirby's life and career. This volume reprints Jack Kirby Collector #27-30, with in-depth looks at Jack's 1970s Marvel Comics work, and his '80s work in comics and animation, plus a special two-part focus on how widespread Kirby's influence is! It features rare interviews with Kirby himself, plus new interviews with Watchmen's Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, Neil Gaiman, Bone's Jeff Smith, Mark "Luke Skywalker" Hamill, and others! See page-after-page of rare Kirby art, including a new special section with over 30 pieces of Kirby art never before published, and more!

Watchmen and Philosophy: A Rorschach Test (The Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series)

Alan Moore's Watchmen is set in 1985 and chronicles the alternative history of the United States where the US edges dangerously closer to nuclear war with the Soviet Union. Within this world exists a group of crime busters, who don elaborate costumes to conceal their identity and fight crime, and an intricate plot to kill and discredit these "superheroes."

Alan Moore's Watchmen popularized the graphic novel format, has been named one of Time magazine's top 100 novels, and is now being made into a highly anticipated movie adaptation. This latest book in the popular Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture series peers into Moore's deeply philosophical work to parse and deconstruct the ethical issues raised by Watchmen's costumed adventurers, their actions, and their world. From nuclear destruction to utopia, from governmental authority to human morality and social responsibility, it answers questions fans have had for years about Watchmen's ethical quandaries, themes, and characters.

Can we justify Ozymandias's grand plan?

Does Dr. Manhattan really know what's going to happen in the future?

Is the Comedian actually a comedian (or just a jerk)?

Can either Silk Spectre be considered a feminist?

Does Nite Owl's paunch actually make him virtuous?

Watchmen is the most critically acclaimed graphic novel ever published and turned the world of comic superheroes on its head. This masterpiece of realistic storytelling, dialogue, and artwork, courtesy of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, raises a host of compelling philosophical questions. How do Ozymandias and Rorschach justify their actions? What are the political ramifications of the Comedian's work for the government? How do we explain the nature of Dr. Manhattan? And can a graphic novel be considered literature? Whether you're reading Watchmen for the first time or have been a fan for more than twenty years, Watchmen and Philosophy will help you read deeper into the philosophical questions and the revolutionary story that changed comic fiction forever.

DC Comics Classics Library: Superman - Kryptonite Nevermore (Dc Classics Library) (Hardcover)

Humbug (2 Volume Set) [BOX SET] (Hardcover)

Between MAD and Annie Fanny, Kurtzman's biographical summaries will note that he created and edited three other magazines, Trump, Humbug, and Help!, but, whereas his MAD and Annie Fanny are readily available in reprint form, his major satirical work in the interim period is virtually unknown. Humbug, which had poor distribution, may be the least known, but to those who treasure the rare original copies, it equals or even exceeds MAD in displaying Kurtzman's creative genius. Humbug was unique in that it was actually published by the artists who created it: Kurtzman and his cohorts from MAD Will Elder, Jack Davis, and Al Jaffee, were joined by universally acclaimed cartoonist Arnold Roth. With no publisher above them to rein them in, this little band of creators produced some of the most trenchant and engaging satire of American culture ever to appear on American newsstands. At last, the entire run of 11 issues of Humbug is being reprinted in a deluxe format, much of it reproduced from the original art, allowing even owners of the original cheaply-printed issues to see the full impact of these creators' artistry for the first time

Speaking of which, does anyone know the status of this? Amazon still lists it as due out 12/29, but (a) at the same time it notes that "this title has not yet been released" & (b) last time I checked, a search for "Blazing Combat" on Fantagraphics' site yielded nothing whatsoever.

Since I think Fantagraphics is the company that was soliciting Trump back in '07 or so, only to see that supposed project disappear into nothingness, I'm growing slightly concerned, especially given various publishers' propensity for ... well, lying about stuff.

Blazing Combat is more like March now.

Trump was just announced by Dark Horse.

I'm not so sure that they're lying, but just that things change. Overall, I find Fantagraphics to be pretty good about letting customers know what's happening via their forums. Not perfect, certainly, but better than most.

Good to know. (Actually, I was thinking more about how Marvel & DC execs lie because it's apparently easier than telling the truth ... And having trained as a book editor & worked as a newspaper & online editor, I learned long ago that the people who put out books & other publications don't always deserve the benefit of the doubt.)
