I started from the most recent Captain America series. I already knew how he came to be though.

I don't know if that helps. Just grab some trades and see how it goes

Default What good Captain America trades should I get?

I mostly read DC, and not much Marvel, that's not to say I don't like Marvel I just haven't really gotten around to reading much of it.

So I'd like to read some good Captain America stories, a character I don't know that much about, all I've read is The Death of Captain America. I'll probably pick up Reborn in Trade, so I want advice on what good Captain America trades I should get, ones before he died. Also I'm not sure if this is where to post this or, maybe you've already got a thread for this sort of thing, so sorry in advance if I've posted it in the wrong place.

Also with some good Captain America trades, I wanna know what current monthly's I should pick up and when is a good jumping on point.

    Thanks in advanced.
Pull list: Animal Man, Action Comics, Aquaman, Batman, Batman Inc, Detective Comics, Green Lantern, Justice League, Ravagers, Superman, Swamp Thing

Well, not everyone's perfect But this is your chance to fix that!

IMO Captain America is the best single character comic book on the market and has been for 55+ issues!

Well, with Captain America Brubaker has crafted an EPIC story. So you really do need to read from the start.

Starting in issue 602 they started a new storyline called "Two America's" and only two issues are out.

However the problem is a lot of the ideas and one rather important character was introduced earlier in the EPIC series (did I mention it's EPIC?) so it's hard to just jump in without all the background knowledge.

I would recommend you start at the first trade and get up as far as you can in those and then get the singles after that. Or, if you are a collector like myself and want the issues themselves, ht up eBay!

In the beginning of Brubaker's Cap run, it is said that Red Skull is living in a clone of Steve Roger's body. I've always wanted to check out this story. Does anyone know when this took place?

I had a thread on this not long ago asking specifically for non-Brubaker Cap recs and got a lot of great responses. Off the top of my head the Roger Stern/John Byrne run was very highly recommended. Also the Mark Waid stuff from before Heroes Reborn.

I just got my TPB of War & Remembrance by Stern/Byrne last week, but haven't got around to reading it yet.

Default So I Wanna Give Captain America a Try...

... but I'm need to figure out where to start. I know, I know, we see these threads pop up all the time and it would be easier to check Wikipedia, etc, but I like getting feedback from people who actually read and like the books I'm curious about.

That said, I've always been a peripheral fan and enjoyed his presence in the Avengers. I've only picked up a handful of issues from his solo books over the years, and only when they've been part of a crossover or other event. With all the rave reveiws Brubaker's run has received the past few yrs (I'm a little late, I know) I've been checking into trades both on Amazon and at the LCS. It's kind of annoying that they don't just number the volumes sequentially like the other series, as opposed to groups of 2 (or not at all in some cases).

So I thought a way around that was just to pick up the omnibus (#1-25) and get a fat chunk of issues all together in one pretty package, but wasn't sure I'd like it enought to slap down $75. So as luck would have it I just stopped by a used book store down the street that carries a lot of trades and found that they had 3 copies, 2 of which were in like-new condition for $35!!! The lady was kind enough to hold one for me up to 48 hrs, now I just need to decide if it's worth it or, as a Cap newbie, I should just stick to an earlier trade.

    Thoughts?

My recommendation is to get the Omnibus. It's worth the money if you have it, but if you don't the Trades or the hardcovers are good as well.

If you start at the beginning of Brubaker's run you won't be disappointed.

It depends on where you'd like to start.

If you're completely new to the character I'd recommend getting the Essential Captain America volumes. There are four out now with a fifth volume on the way.

I don't do trades too often so I'm not sure if this is collected but I'd get issues 332-350:

Great story showing Cap being replaced by US Agent (then known as the Super Patriot).

The US Government wants a tighter leash around Steve and cite that as the name/uniform/shield of Captain America were creations of the US Military that he can either A) play ball or B) relenquish the role.

You should be able to find these back issues pretty cheap on E-bay or elsewhere.

I do feel like the omnibus is quite a steal at $35, and even if I don't like it I would probably have no difficulty getting rid of it. Even on Amazon or DCBS I can't get the trades that make up the omnibus for less than that. So I believe I'll be picking this up...

I have a hard time reading b&w newsprint. I tried it with the X-Men essentials (picked up 3 for cheap) and barely made it through the first volume.

I do love me some U.S.Agent, and am probably more familiar with his character than Cap's. I might track these down as well. Thanks for the tip!
