Wonder Woman Still in Development says Joel Silver and Has Writers On Board!

IESB's Robert Sanchez spoke with producer Joel Silver today at the Long Beach Speedway for the junket of SPEED RACER.

More on Speed Racer later, the tidbit of news he got was actually on the future of Wonder Woman.

Silver says he's got writers working on a new script. And which writers are those? They are the guys behind the Wonder Woman World War II based script that WB snatched up last year, Matthew Jennison and Brent Strickland.

No, this new script will not be set in WW II like the spec script these guys drew up instead a whole new storyline and setting are currently being developed.

Originally shying away from an "origin" or genesis story for the superwoman, Silver has reconsidered and says they are really looking into a story involving Paradise Island and her background.

IESB asked if Silver had a director in mind, perhaps the Wachoski brothers that have just finished Speed Racer. Well, he wouldn't answer the question directly (does he ever?) but he did say that Andy Wachowski had an idea on how to open the Wonder Woman film. When pressed further he would not comment.

I know some of you are wondering, what about the Justice League film? Does it have any impact on this production?

Silver says no, this Wonder Woman and the Justice League Wonder Woman (if she ever makes it to the big screen) will be completely different a la the Christian Bale Batman and Brandon Routh Superman.

I know Bale never intended to do a JLA movie. So I understand why he wouldn't play JLA Batman, but what is the point of changing everyone around? I guess I can understand if they have Routh, but not Bale.

So I wonder if my daughter can play her as a baby?

They never intended to have Ruth or Bale in JLA..
their movies are like Earth-1 and the JLA movie is like Earth-suckfest

the Wonder Woman movie would also be like Earth-1... hopefully..

I actually think that a movie that concentrates heavily on Paradise Island could be a winner. Show us her background, establish her mythology and have gorgeous scenery.

Ant-Man does not have a script or a Director..

WonderWoman has had about 50 scripts and 20 directors..


Ant-Man is a movie that can be made for 75.000.000 USD and make a profit based on Fans alone..

Wonder Woman is a MINIMUM!! 150.000.000 USD movie that MUST be Epic in order to make a profit.. and Movies based around a Female lead have a history of under preforming at the boxoffice..

Ant-Man is a small piece of a larger franchise (Avengers)

Actually, Ant-Man does have a director. Edgar Wright, who directed Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz and the upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

He said in March, 2008 that they are currently working on the second draft of the script.

No, they're being cautious because both Batman Begins and Superman Returns failed to really set the box office on fire (though Begins at least did decent business compared to its budget). If they can't get a surefire hit out of either Batman or Superman, then they're not going to get much out of Wonder Woman.

Also, Ant-Man directed by Edgar Wright, even theoretically, is just about a million times better than anything Joel Silver could possibly conceive.

And I don't say that out of hatred for Wonder Woman, but out of love for Edgar Wright. And hatred for Joel Silver.

The film cultures surrounding the Marvel and DC universes are very different. Even before they started their own studio, dedicated only to making their movies, Marvel had the pick of film companies to take their projects to. If Company A seemed to have their heads up their asses about Punching Guy: The Movie, they could take it to somebody else, somebody who had maybe lined up better people or just knew how to corral it's dumbass producers better. Even when completed projects went direly off the rails (c.f. Fantastic Four, X3), they could wait for the license to expire and take it to someone else after a cool-off period.

DC, meanwhile, is stuck with Warner Bros. Pictures. They don't have an Avi Arad looking out for their interests, or a Hollywood outsider able to cut through the bizarre bullshit that permeates that culture and mutates films into things quite unrecognizable as their root form (this happens to "original" screenplays, too). There's no doubt that, if the corporate heads of DC and Warner Pictures disagree on something, it'll be DC that folds. They, and the characters, are completely subject to the byzantine whims of the studio.

You get the feeling Warners sees DC as a can of Play-Doh: a brightly colored, malleable, non-toxic, unformed substance to be run through their machines and pulled, rolled, stretched, broken, and hammered into whatever shapes they see fit. Not a creative product in its own right, but merely raw material. And all the toddlers (a perfect metaphor for movie producers if ever there was one) they give the Play-Doh to seem to be the type who eat paint off the walls and just can't quite get the hang of Big-Kid pants.

Seconded - Edgar Wright is brilliant. Man's got more references per shot than any other director ....Tarantino's got nothing on him

With most directors, I would expect Ant-Man to be a disaster. But with Edgar Wright...I can't wait to see what he does with it. Especially since all his movies have been comedies and he said this one will be an action adventure with comedy in it.

I heard he's even considering expanding Don't into a feature. Plus there's casting Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, which is just wonderful.

Anyway.....fingers crossed for Wonder Woman. Hire Mary Harron if you have any balls at all Warners
