    Default Too many titles?

I know you guys might be sick of 'oh, I'm new g1mm3 the g00d comix' threads, but errr, I'm new to BAtman and want to be reading the good titles.

Thing is, I've found Batman has like so many titles that are connected to him and Gotham City and I don't really want to buy a 3 or 4 issues of each title, just to find out it's not that good of a title. Then again, I'm only assuming that with so many titles that atleast a few have to be bad, odds and all that.

It's just too big of a thing for me to jump into and to figure out myself, so I've come to ask for a little direction? I've pciked up a couple of issues of Detective comics, Batman 672 (which Ienjoyed a lot, even though I didn't know what was going on), first issue of Simon Dark 9which ipicked up cause it was Gotham related) and the first three issues of the joker arc of Batman Confidential. I was impressed with all of them really, but I wanna know what the other Gotham related titles are like?

Is there any titles that really stand out? Cause like I say, I don't wanna go through a few issues of each comic due to the fact I'm trying to save a bit of cash for like non-comic things (sure you all know how much of a burn on your money comics are when you first get started).

If you are looking strictly Batman then you pretty much nailed it with your choices of Batman (we are all a little lost right now), Detective and Batman Confidential (which is supposed to be early Batman but does not necessary line up with past stories). If you are looking Batman family then Catwoman is a good read and there are high hopes for Nightwing with the change in creative team. Personally I like the new Batman & The Outsiders and since the book in only on issue #3 you would be getting in early.

Ya, definitely Nightwing. I just started on it and I love it.

I agree with all of these choices! Especially the Cat Woamn title...probably my favorite of all my books. If you stick with the basics Batman and Detective Comics...you should be fine. I know what you mean about not wanting to buy out the store...unfortunately, I said the same thing once...now I have 20 titles on my pull list.

I enjoy Detectives, Batman, Batman and the Outsiders, and Batman Confidential and Nightwing as well. Gotham Underground has been a decent mini series. I've been a little put off with Catwoman lately, even though I still subscribe to it. Hopefully after the Salvation Run crossover they can get Selina Kyle back on track.

I was thinking about adding Robin to my pull list since Chuck Dixon's coming back. Anyone have an opinion about Dixon coming back to this series? I wonder if he'll have the impact on the first issue as Tomasi had on his first issue as Nightwing's new writer. I was really impressed with Nightwing.

I was wondering about everyone's opinions on Frank Miller's All Star Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder. Is that a title worth investing in?

Opinion is divided. Personally I loathe the book. It's portrayal of Batman feels like a huge "up yours" to Batman fans. Plus its constantly late. Some claim it's a parody. I claim its Frank Miller saying "Screw you. I can write whatever I want and I want to write about about Marv from Sin City in a Batman suit." I certainly would not recommend it.

Detective Comics and Batman should be your first choices. Catwoman is a great read, but not especially connected to Batman anymore. Birds of Prey is also excellent but with only minimal Bat-ties.

If All Star Batman and Robin was a mini prequel to DKR (there was a reviewer said somthing along these lines) Then (almost) great.

But it's not. It's a bad parody from a once great writer who I personaly think has forgotten that 'have fun' does not mean 'piss take'.

Detective Comics (with Dini writing) are normally awesome, unfortunately there's this crappy R'as Ah Ghul crossover garbage that just finished. Batman Confidential's been cancelled, hasn't it?

If you can, pick up Grant Morrison's run, I love it, and there's not that many back issues. He's building to something in Batman and I can't wait to see what it is.

Paul Dini's Detective Comics run is great. Most of the bat books just came off of the Ressurection of Ra's al Ghul story so they'll be playing on that for a while.

Otherwise, there's Nightwing and Catwoman which I think are great right now.

thanks for the response, much appreciated. I'll try and pick up Nightwing and Catwoman, see how I like those. What's Batman and the Outsiders like? does it tie in a lot with other DC characters? Just asking for the fact that I know next to nothing about DC characters outside of Batman.

Have you read the older Batman comics?

No need to read Batman main series right now really. Detective is very good.

Of the old Batman series, read Legend of The Dark Knight,Shadow of The Bat for good old series. There are many small classic arcs in those old series outside the big famous stories like DKR,year one etc

Outside Batman, you have to read Nightwing from issue 1, its pretty short only 140+ issues so far.
    Pull List:
    The Walking Dead,Fatale,Near Death,Storm Dogs,Happy,BPRD,XO-Manowar
    American Vampire,Animal Man,Swamp Thing
    Daredevil, Winter Soldier,Indestructible Hulk

Currently Batman and the Outsiders is building itself up...current members include Batman, Batgirl, Geo-Force, Katana, Grace, and Metamorpho... future issues will have Green Arrow joining and it’s rumored Aquaman further down the road. They've so far in their 3 issues gone up against the JLA (a couple of JLA members) and if what Bat’s is up to continues I won’t be surprised if they end up fighting pretty much everyone.

pick up nightwing 140...its a new team and they're taking the book in a new direction so you won't really need to get back issues or trades to catch up. tomasi and rags have the potential to be the best nightwing team ever so it would be smart to pick it up now. if you dont believe me check the reviews on this site, and the comicbloc.com and newsarama message boards. it was also named book of the week by wizard magazine. http://www.wizarduniverse.com/magazi...212.cfm?page=3

trust me you wont regret it. ;)
