Penance/Hollow Appreciation

I very much doubt the idea of Marius being upset to the point of crying, but I like that he'd gone to Yugoslavia and especially this part: "He turned to go farther down the alley when he came face to face with the girl he was looking for. She glared at him, poised to strike at him. He saw in her soul that she was angry." -- I often imagine that being the tone of their initial meeting, as well. And I liked the fact that she was once out for revenge; my original character version of her was like that, too. Would make sense, given the war-torn imagery in her head when Emma attacked/read her.

And I initially wasn't sold on a Marius x Penny romance, but then I looked back at that issue where she betrayed him, and it REALLY DOES seem like Marius was just the first of a long line of bad boy choices (Marius St. Croix, Jonothon Starsmore, Philip Urich), to the point where I made a vid about it:

Thanks for saying that. That fic is the only one that I wrote from Emplate's POV. I recall one fic where Emplate tried to commit suicide, where it suggested that Marius was fighiting the influence of Emplate. And in all honesty, the idea of a Penance Emplate relationship seemed more plausable then the shlock Hama came up with. I sometimes wonder if I might have started something years ago, putting Penny into a relationship. Over the years, I've seen some odd pairings for her. A fic with her and Pete Wisdom. A unique fic where Penance is 18, and she caught the eye of one of the X-Men (I won't say which one, but in the end, I know I was laughing). I also know another Generation X fic writer used my own character, and created their own version of his and Penny's relationship (with my input on that, but he did the writing).

I was so frustrated by a lack of answers that I came up with my own version of Monet's recollection of events to shed light on the whole thing... but it's been weeks now and I forget it, lol.

One key factor was Monet using her telepathy to create an astral world inside Penance's mind, much like we've seen Jean Grey do and other such telepaths, so that she wouldn't have to live in the awful reality of being captured and tortured by Marius everyday (a selfish thing to do if there ever was one, but who could really blame her?). She soon found that she wasn't alone, that a quiet girl with alabaster skin and long raven black hair and haunting blue eyes, with a fondness for hiding in trees and for nature in general, was also there. Slowly, Monet won this girl's trust, and she eventually learned that this girl was Emplate's prisoner, captured shortly before Monet was fused into her, designed to be Monet's perfect prison if she refused his offer to rule alongside him.

When they were freed by Gateway, Monet wanted to return to control of Penance's, as she had been in control when she jumped through the portal after Marius, but, to her own horror, found that control had reverted back to the body's original owner, the girl with the alabaster skin. Monet could do nothing but be a prisoner, watching as, among other things, Jubilee gave her apples, Jubilee thus earning Monet's scorn (when all it really was, was misplaced rage on Monet's part... Monet was ACTUALLY angry with herself for being so helpless, not that she'd ever admit it).

I really like this explanation and have been thinking along similar lines also. It really would explain a lot and further strengthen Monet's character. I really like the bit about her disdain for Jubilee really being feelings of helplessness and shame about herself. The best part to me is that it sets the stage for a separate Penance personality before Emplate came on the scene. I always hated that "hollow" view of her and "Who's in the body now?" Duh, the original Penance of course! Lobdell made it pretty clear, don't know why shlockhead Hama couldn't see the obvious.

I'm guessing Gage, since he was a fan of the Loners series. If Cebulski had had anything to do with it, Namie would've been included instead of Holly. Cebulski really seemed to favor creating a red-haired robot girl with being-captured issues and having her take all the plotlines away from the red-haired mutant girl with being-captured issues.

I really wish Loners had escaped cancellation since Cebulski probably would have made that connection at some point. Why do people with the ability to speak get all the good stories. Plus, he really seemed to setting up some interesting storylines that would have been cool in general to see. Such an underrated comic. *sigh*

"Penny fans" has been working pretty well for me, lol.

I like it! We could also say "Penny Pals" to capture some alliteration also. :P

A strong maybe for sure. I think I would have to see it in full color to really make a determination, but it does capture some of the old classic elements. Then again, if it means more exposure, put as many Avengers logos as possible! She could be wearing Avengers Reeboks for all I care. :D

I just never mentioned it because Richard and I were doing pretty well keeping her afloat at first, then suddenly everyone started targeting her, and frankly I wasn't sure if anyone from CBR wanted to join CV to join a lost cause (though I'll keep on fighting till the end). Only rule is that you vote only once per 24 hours (although we've been pretty liberal... sometimes posts are 18 hours apart and no one mentions it. Just try to do it around the same time every day). If nothing else, she's made it to the Top 4.

Heck yeah, anything for Penny! I wish I had known about it sooner, but I can barely keep up with the CBR boards. She has been doing pretty good all things considered, and it's great to see her in the Top 4 for sure. However, she deserves #1 over Snobby, Bad Skin, and No Face (:P)! Penny Fans unite for a last minute victory (or save from death at least)! How about we all change our comicvine photos to Penny to show our support?

A couple of years ago, after Issue # 40 came out, I was unsatisfied with the story they came up with (I shouldn't say they, I should say 'that #$@&!') that I wrote my own version of how they met. It was called Long Ago, and it was from Emplate's POV. I do hope you all read it, since you are all 'Penny fans' (I actually like that name). Anyhow, here is the link. Long_Ago

One thing I don't get though is why Penance doesn't seem quite so bloodthirsty and is unable to speak in Generation X? Wasn't sure what to expect of this song b/c it's Hanson, but it was pretty catchy and upbeat. While I do like "Pretty Penny" from Stone Temple Pilots, this would probably make a better theme.

Well, I ran with info I read about Penance long ago, stating her homeland was Yugoslavia. I looked up the language, and it was Serbo-Croation. Plus, the way her powers work, it explains the hard time communicating with her.

That particular story was not one that I wrote. I will need to find it again, but I did not include the details, because the author of it didn't include them. Sadly, the website I had seen that fic on is no longer around.
