Been away from the Internet for a bit. Wish I could vote for more than one X-Man, because I have more than one favorite. Don't throw things at me, but Nightcrawler is top of my list, then Storm, then Penny.
I'm bummed because I was looking forward to Penance having a bit more of a role in AoA than just background. I'm another fan who thinks Penny is a person in her own right. It was my understanding that Lobdell's original idea for Penance was that she was simply a deaf mutant and her powers where genetic. It was later writers that hijacked that idea and made her backstory so much more complicated.
I've been away from CBR for a few days. Hehe, blame Starleaf, she got me addicted to Buffy and I've been on a bender the past week. ;P
Sorry to hear this. Hope you dad is doing ok and the job search is going well! Keep us updated.
That was some truly disappointing AOA news. I understand wanting to use M, but why steal the Penance name? :(
Those are some optimistic points you made though. Maybe an AOA Yugoslavian "Hollow" (or a more appropriate name) will pop up eventually. It is good to see Gen-Xers get their due though, hopefully it will lead to a future appearance by our favorite. ;)
Wow, this thread is a secret meeting place for Storm fans. :P Just glad Penny is in your Top 4. My current Top 4 is X-Man, Penance, Chamber, and Dani. And yep, your understanding of Lobdell's plans is consistent with what I've heard also. Such a simple idea, why did it have to become so complicated...?
1. it's great to see you back. : )
2. thanks and include him in your prayers. : )
3. Well I hope M transforms into Hollow again. : )
4. Ahaha. kind of. Storm will always be my #1, then #2 is Apocalypse, then #3 is Hollow. But Im more active in Hollow topics than Apocalypse topics.

Lol, no problem, it's definitely confusing. XD
Woot. \o/
Nightcrawler's cool, too! Oddly colored mutants like Kurt and Penny have to stick together, lol. XD And I'm a huge Storm fan, too. ^^
And you're right, she was originally supposed to be the first deaf superhero (that honor later went to Echo), a traumatized 14-year old Yugoslavian mutant. It looks like Penance or Lady Penance is just going to be M's codename in Age of Apocalypse. She will be an important part of the plot at some point, but sadly it doesn't seem likely that our Penance will make an appearance.
Let's just hope Lapham doesn't complicate things further by writing with that bogus "Penance is just Monet transformed" theory. I can handle the coincidence of Monet taking up the Penance codename in Age of Apocalypse, but I can't handle yet another writer outright stating that Penance doesn't exist as her own entity. Because going by the character's original creation concept and 30+ issues of Generation X, she totally is!
P.S. Nice to hear from you again, Indigo. ^.^
Ahaha! Buffy ftw!
Whoops! Wrong slayer.
HMM, something's still not quite right!
There you are! Hello, Awesome!
The deaf part is correct. One of the times it's most obvious is in that issue where Emma tries to trade her to Emplate in exchange for the whereabouts of the other kids: on the opening page, Penance's narration (of sorts) mentions the lady (Emma) and other characters not by their names, but by descriptions (since she's deaf, she's never heard their names). Someone once explained it that way, perhaps Lobdell himself in an interview, I forget. It's also implied in some of the earliest issues in scenes about Penance, too. Something about the way freedom and solitude are explained not in words, but in feelings.
That's an amazing allegory (metaphor?) in the dream, though, thanks for sharing!
I think some fans explained it as she could not hear well when her powers are activated. Also, I think there are some scenes in the comics, where she actually reacts to sound.
As for the dream, don't thank me, thank Lobdell. He is one of the writers of the first Generation X novel. Maybe over the weekend, I'll pull the novel out and reread that particular part.
So Hollow is deaf?

In the later comics, she reacts to sound. Not in Lobdell's originals. I don't think any other writer understood that she was deaf and/or could not handle the role of writing a deaf-mute so they just went with mute later on.
Re: The Novel and everything else: Lobdell is so awesome!
She was mute-deaf when she first appeared (this also explains why she bonded with Chamber early on... his voice was the first she ever actually "heard" and is why he was able to reason with her, by speaking directly into her mind).
However, it was never specifically stated in the comics, so it was easy for later writers to forget and/or to retcon later.
I'm personally fine with her not being deaf. I'm even fine with her speaking (though I wasn't, initally), as long as it's made clear that she can't speak much, maybe because of her powers.
Well, I know that when I started writing the Cale Storyline, I often would show that when she is using her powers, or 'tensed up', it is harder for her to speak. If she does manage to speak, it is will difficulty, and an obvious stutter. As she gets more comfortable using her powers, that goes away. I still think I keep it up though.
I like Hollow to be a silent type of person cos when she speaks, it is so special that when Starleafgirl told me Hollow actually uttered something with a scan, i cried with tears of joy. : )
