    Default Can't get into DC!!!

OK, I would appreciate a little help here. Although I'm not sure what help I want but anyway...

I like Batman. I like him, really. But I can't find any other DC character interesting. I mean I can't actually care for almost no one in DC. So I bought 52, and I thought that it would be a nice "commercial" series, to check some DC characters. But my problem is that I got more confused than Infinite Crisis. I mean I think that someone who is not familiar with the marvel characters can understand more of what is happening, during CW, than if someone is not familiar with DC characters, in IC. I thought I would understand who the DCU works, but I didn't get it. I don't get the multiverse, how it was working, and how it works now. I'm not getting countdown, I was disappointed by the fact that I couldn't follow what happens.

So, I guess, my question is this: Am I just stupid, or it's just that DC is not my taste?

Oh, and when I am refering to DC, I don't count Vertigo, only the super hero books.

Just pick up anything that has to do with The Sinestro Corps War:

    Sinestro Corps War Special
    Green Lantern
    Green Lantern Corps

The BEST thing DC is putting out right now.

Either Sinestro War or Justice Society of America..

To be honest though, if you have any questions about anything you see in the comics just do a little research on Wikipedia and it will all become clear

Hopefully DC should now be sorting it's house out with the upcoming Final Crisis which should set in stone past, present and future (at least until they change their minds again)

I can see the difficulty in getting into DC right now since the entire universe and its continuity have been in flux for the last two or more years. That can seem pretty intimidating.

The best bet might be to get into Green Lantern via The Sinestro Corps War and Justice Society of America for the next arc while the rest of the DCU sorts itself out. All-Star Superman (which comes out occasionally) is good, and you can't go wrong with issues of Detective Comics written by Paul Dini.

Justice tends to be an amazing gateway drug for DC.

Some DC books can be very confusing and the introduction of 52 new earths to keep track of doesn't make it very reader friendly either. However, not all DC books are confusing and you can still enjoy the handful of good ones without becoming immersed in the entire Crisis-Countdown mess.

Here are some EXCELLENT books that come out on a regular basis which you can pick up from any new issue and begin enjoying:

1: Booster Gold by Johns, Katz and Jurgens. Top quality writing and art. You say you enjoyed 52 and here is a character that continues from that line of stories. This is the new buzz hot book setting new standards of excellence... monthly.

2: Brave and The Bold by Waid and Perez. Also consistently top quality writing and art. Anything by Waid and Perez, well, you know its going to be good. Perez can make Plop look interesting.

3: Justice Society of America by Johns and Eagleshem. This is an amazing book with a neat twist on America's premiere superteam. If you're confused by the whole multiple earths concept, this might be a bit ify as an Alternate Reality Superman (Kingdom Come) is about to join the team. It's not difficult though, Geoff will fill you in and after one issue, you'll be hungry for more.

4: Green Lantern by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis. Easily the best book DC is publishing today. A little event related with a couple of added specials but you can still enjoy the stories without purchasing the specials. Purchasing the specials though will give you more information on the villains and they're very well done too. I should also mention that Reis is knocking it out of the park... monthly.

If you like Marvel and their Civil War / World War Hulk material, you'll love Green Lantern the Sinestro Wars. Marvel may call themselves the House of Ideas but they get their ideas from DC then fast track their stuff into print before DC does to make themselves appear as though they had the idea first. There's a reason Marvel looks to DC for ideas and Green Lantern is the prime reason why.

Honorable mention goes to Death of The New Gods; while Dan Didio's silly reign of terror on DC Characters continues, Death of The New Gods is by Jim Starlin and the art is simply too beautiful to pass up. For those who may not remember, Jim Starlin is the talent behind the masterpiece Death of Captain Marvel, Dreadstar and many others. Miss this at your own peril!

Double Honorable mention goes Jim Shooter on Legion of Superheroes. If you love Marvel, Jim is the guy who carried Marvel into the bronze age, the writer of tons of brilliant material and one of the founders of Valiant Comics. He knows his stuff, is highly creative and anything that has his name on it usually enables the consumer to buy with confidence.

The rest of DC's line is, well... nuff said.

One of the questions I have about DCU continuity:

DC did Crisis on Infinite Earths. This event erased all parallel Earths, except Earth - 1, right? So, how things were working, up to this point? I mean, where there books related to Earth - 1 and Earth - 2, and they decided to erase something, or they restarted all their characters after COIE, giving the name "Earth 1"? Also, the characters remember those events taking place, or was it something like Marvel vs DC, for example, recreating the universe and nothing happened? And does it have any significance, for follow the DC continuity?

Blue Beetle seems to be a very cool book.

    All Star Superman is awesome!

    Default Re: Crisis

Crisis on Infinite Earths was a convoluted mess of a limited series that basically wiped out all of the parallel Earths that had existed up until 1985.

Five surviving Earths (including Earth-1) were smushed into a single Earth, which caused many continuity problems with certain Legacy characters.

I have no clue what the current status is; it seems there's 'New' Earth (created at the end of Infinite Crisis) and 51 others (which may or may not include Earth-1).

It would've been far simpler to blow up the multiverse back in 1985, except for a single Earth, which would have been a perfect starting point for a new DC Universe.

Actually, the result of Crisis on Infinite Earths might have made a mess of things but the story and art in the series were so top notch, it's the reason Dan Didio is still trying to milk that cow to this very day.

So you say Booster Gold is not confusing? I wanted to get it, but I thought that with all the confusion as to what happens in DCU, I would not be able to follow. They are changing events in this series, am I right? I mean, if I remember right, Booster travels to the past to correct mistakes in the continuity. Is he traveling to all 52 Earths?

OMG, I thought that we were following Earth 1 since COIE!!!! Oh, I get it now: Did they do Zero Hour and Kingdom Come to explain what really happened there, or I lost it completely? And please tell me, does anyone remember the event? By the look of it, I think no, but They remember what happened now. Has the landscape changed?

I think that a friend of mine was right when he once said "DC continuity is more messed up than marvel's however funny that sounds."

Well, one question that I think should be asked first, matthewaos, is what DC comics have you actually read? It's easy to be turned off these characters if you've read the wrong stuff. Have you read Morrison's JLA? Or Waid's or Johns' Flash or the Giffen/ Demaittes Justice League?

I have read some of Morrison's issues. I think the first 8 issues. I have also read an issues or two by Giffen/DeMatteis. I'm going to get the TPB they are publishing now. I can't be interested about Flash, but if the story is extremely good, I will look foreword to read it.

I'm currently reading Detective comics, Batman (but I think I'm gonna drop it), and I think that's all! I would like to pick Booster Gold, I was ready to do it actually, but I got scared, and thought that this is an extra 3.50 euros, in a period that I wanted to drop some comics.
